If it's a PH-1 phaser, it will distort when used with a high output pickup. Boss changed the gain structure inside the pedal so that the later PH-1r
has a voltage-dividing stage that halves the signal level being phased by the JFET's, and boosts the signal back up again at the output.
My PH-1 sounds exquisite with "vintage" style single coils or low-output humbuckers, but has a buzzy / farty low frequency distortion with high output pickups. My PH-1r
sounds cleaner and slightly brighter, but will still distort with a big chord smash from a high output pickup.
You might be better off looking for a PH-1r
, unless you use very high output pickups, in which case it might be best to look for a phaser that doesn't use JFET's.
