It is supposed to be a wampler plexi drive, but some people complain it cannot reach unity gain on the output. I would avoid that one.
The new line is not as well made as the original pedals.

^ I would suspect it's more likely to be the carl martin plexitone- the colour of the box is the same, and the clips i've heard of the carl martin sound almost identical.

Obviously you'd need to trace the circuit to be sure- but at the moment my (unfounded) suspicion is it's the carl martin clone.

mine goes way over unity, but obviously QC could be all over the place on such cheap pedals.

I haven't seen much mention of the Joyo JDI-01 direct box. The Joyo DI is similar to (can't say if it's a clone) the Radial JDX, Palmer, Red Box, Behringer Ultra G or similar guitar amp direct boxes. It's main function is to go between a guitar amp and speaker box. The amp sound goes through the DI's (4x12 or combo) speaker simulator and comes out at line level. Live sound and studio engineers sometimes like this type of DI for consistent predictable sound and lack of stage bleed vs a mic'd cabinet. Obviously the quality of the speaker simulation is critical to the usefulness of the DI. ASFAIK only the Behringer is also a load box (no speaker cabinet required). cheers 8)

Correction, in fact you DO need a speaker plugged in or a dummy load with the Behringer Ultra G. It appears you need a speaker or dummy load with all the guitar amp DI's...

So, it is based on the COT and Electra family tree?

The purple plexi is built around an LM386. It's actually pretty similar to the ROG Little Gem (plus a tone control and a modified gain control) used as a pedal instead of as an amplifier.

Pulled apart my Joyo Noise Gate pedal the other day, haven't completely checked it but it looks like it could be the MXR Noise Gate when comparing to a couple of schematics I found online. I've got gutshots I can post if anyone wants them, it's all SMD though.

FYI, I've opened my Joyo Hot Plexi last week. It is a LM386 driven by an opamp.

^ Thanks for that :) So that means it's not a wampler clone, right? Most of the wamplers are JFET-based, aren't they?

As I said before, I have strong suspicions it's a Carl Martin Plexitone clone. I have nothing to back that up, other than the clips I've heard (which I admit are pretty much no proof whatsoever).

The PlexiTone uses 4 op-amps. According to Fender56, this is an LM386 driven by an op-amp. Based on that alone, I think nickthemen is probably right, it's a Lovepedal Purple Plexi, possibly with an op-amp input buffer.

has anyone looked at the Joyo Compressor more closely? I hear it is more transparent than dynacomp but i hate transparent compressors. i want the squashy sound that dynacomp gives. could the Joyo compressor be modded to give more squash or does it have any relation to dynacomp/ross?

A shop around here was eliminating their stock of these DIs. Guess these weren't a big seller. They were giving them away for 4,60€ a piece, so i got three. Once i find some time i could confirm if it's a Red Box. Features do seem to match H&K Red Box MKIII all the way to every single feature, including in/out impedances. To help fill in some blanks and confirm the list on the first page, a nice person at Joyo has said the following:

Code: Select all

JF-01 Vintage Overdrive = IBANEZ TS-808
JF-02 Ultimate Drive = Fulltone OCD
JF-04 High Gain Distortion = Marshall Shredmaster
JF-05 Classic Chorus = IBANEZ CS-9
JF-11 6 Band EQ = MXR 6 BAND EQ
JF-17 Extreme Metal = EH metal muff
JDI-01 DI Box = H&K red box classic
JF-35 Pocket Metal = EH pocket metal muff
JF-36 Sweet Baby = Mad Professor Sweet Honey
JF-37 Analog Chorus = BOSS CE-2
JF-38 Roll Boost = Mi-Audio Boost 'n' Buff
JF-39 Deluxe Crunch = "is unique"

From the outside, the JF-39 looks like a "Mi Audio Crunch box" with Presence control to me.
And as we know by now, they might not be exact 1:1 clones, but "heavily inspired by".
R.I.P. Burke Shelley, from one of my favourite (and much underrated) bands - Budgie
Their songs have been covered by Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Soundgarden, Metallica and more.

How about the Joyo Tai Chi?
Looks like a Hermida Audio Zen Drive from the outside.
