I believe the Buzz box was built as an unofficial signature pedal for Buzz from the Melvins. He was into using a MXR blue box. Its supposed to be a blue box and the dod grunge distortion combined. Without taking a close look I'm assuming the grunge circuit replaces the Blue Boxes' usual distortion circuit. Buzz was proud of the fact it was the worst selling DOD pedal of all time haha.

I'll fix up the schematic and post it here in a couple of days. Not that its so complicated... It would be easier to just build the 'squaring' part (two opamps before 4013) -> 4013 -> any tone control and use a mixer to mix in your favorite distortion.

Just a few thoughts off of the top of my head.

I've owned a couple of DOD Buzz Boxes. They are kind of fun for guitar but I think that they are at their best on synths! I eventually sold the Buzz Boxes on ebay for stupid inflated prices, both times to synth guys. The BB can take a bland synth patch into wild edgy territory.

I think that if the distortion section was replaced with something more guitar oriented (a FF would be more interesting) it would be a very cool build. Perhaps the dirt section could be dropped and the pedal could be used with other dirt pedals.

I plan on replacing the dirt section with DOD's Punkifier.

Never truly understanding the appeal of the Buzz Box in its raw form, I discovered a very simple mod that enables it to behave more like a Blue Box. The "Heavy" control now sets the level of the sub-suboctave from non-existent to pretty much all of the signal, with USABLE levels (like an equal mix with the distorted sound) in-between. Much more useful (for my purposes, anyway), though such a change is probably sacrilege to the true noise musicians among us.

The horrendously ugly (IMHO) sound of the stock Buzz Box stems from the attempt to mix the grunge signal (at < 1 volt) with the sub-suboctave signal produced by a CMOS flip-flop (9V P-P). Turning the "Heavy" control beyond about 9:00 causes the flip-flop output to swamp the grunge output. There is a jumper located near this control (it may be a plain wire, or it may be a 0-ohm "resistor" -- a cylinder with a single black band); replacing this with a suitably sized real resistor (I think I used something in the 82K - 100K range, IIRC) tames the flip-flop output to a level comparable to the grunge level, enabling the signals to be smoothly blended over the entire range of the control.

can someone tell me what's going on with Q5, Q7, and Q8?
