... and for those who didn't know, I've got a third run of PCBs on the way. Still have some extras available, too.

Ah Oh! Is this going to turn into another 300 page A/DA thread?

All I wanted to know was if it did TZF.

I hear you! I got lost after page 36. Usually I download threads that I'm interested in, on that one I gave up and I'm still waiting for the book to come out...

Ok.....you want it....you get it:

Can you please tell me what is meant by TZF ???

Through Zero Flanging.
I've seen it as a function on some software plugin flangers, but I still don't know what it's supposed to do. The ones I've messed with just sounded like any other flanger to me.

Through Zero Flanging.
And why can´t you wait for another 300 pages before you tell me this "secret" ?

Here's the best explanation I've seen of through-zero flanging (or zero-point flanging): http://groups.google.com/group/rec.audi ... 1992?hl=en&

Well, according to that explanation, there's no possible way to do it without actually using two tape decks. I guess there's your answer Dave.

You can also do it with two delay lines if you're careful to keep their clock frequencies far away from each other. Markus W did that with his Electric Mistress. Fox Rox also has an example of it here. I wouldn't call these samples definitive, but I couldn't find any others.

AG, understanding that flanging is created by mixing the dry sound with the modulated sound, a TZF delays the dry side by a few milliseconds. It doesn't modulate it, it's just a simple delay. When the signals are mixed back together on a TZF, the modulated signal can 'get ahead' of the delayed sound. That causes the 'jet passing overhead' sound, but also can result in silence from the phase cancellation.

Does that help?

I see more clearly now. I wonder if my Dano Psycho Flange is like that - it's wicked panda intense.

If all you want is TZF, save your time and get a Liqua-Flange. I picked up the "core" for about $40 USD and swap it out with my Roto-Machine in the existing base. Even for $120 USD for the full-blown pedal it's a good buy. Distortion->Delay->LF(in TZF mode) is quite wicked - not to mention the ridiculous amt of other flanging sounds you can get with the thing. The step flange setting is very similar to the Maestro sample & hold filter. Not exactly the same, but similar enough to cure me of ever wanting to waste my time building the S&H.

But if you want the A/DA sound and are looking for a long, intense DIY project, you found it. By all means go for it.

edit: I just read through the earlier posts more thoroughly. In order to really hear the "TZF" effect on one of these flangers you really need a lot of harmonic content. IOW, with a clean guitar sound it won't be that noticeable. But with distorted guitar it is very striking.

Well, finally I understand how TZF bis possible in 'real time'. I had suspected that to be the case(the extra delay causing it to never quite 'catch up'), but never heard it explained quite that way, even after reading the 300 page thread... so thanks Dave!

One o these days I gotta finish populating that PCB...

I made a crude attempt to redraw the pcb transfer from the moosapotamus site to use the mn3007 in place of the sad1024 chip with mspaint. I used the pics from the HBE Frostbite Flanger thread for reference. Anyone care to have a look to see if this will work? If this pisses anyone off I'll remove it as I know these boards are still being sold.

I just noticed the drawing is backward and I can't edit. Dam this is harder than I thought. Props to all you guys who reverse this stuff and make layouts. I'll try again later.

Ok , I flipped the transfer. I noticed a couple of spots where the traces aren't connected, but that's how I downloaded the pic from the site. Don't know why that is.

It's a double sided layout. Looks like you've only got the one side.
