Catalinbread - Manx Loaghtan [traced]

Here are some quick shots; I know they're crappy. I'll upload larger ones with those pesky pots removed later this week when I get some more time. I'll also add resistor/cap values to them.

I think that while the technique Catalinbread uses to ground is certainly not the best method, we can all agree that it would be really nice not to have to do any soldering while the board is in the box. I'm pretty sure that's the thinking behind it, to minimize build time and therefore costs.freq67 wrote:God I hate that grounding technique.
They're smart guys! I definitely wouldn't have thought to use a spring. That being said, I'm really interested in comparing this to Blackout Effector's Musket fuzz. Catalinbread, in my opinion, is top-class, with Blackout a close second in terms of build quality:cost.
Thank you for the pictures mmolteratx!

Pots removed and better pics:
I'll add component values later. Q4 is a 2n5457, Q1 and Q2 are 2n5088, Q3 and Q5 are Fairchild 2n2222A. Diodes are standard 1n4148. Yellow lines are top traces, orange are bottom traces, the blue line represents a resistor you can't see in the photo.

It is a neat idea, I used a spring when I built my SFT, I put a smear of grease on the case where the spring touches it to prevent any corrosion forming.
You are only earthing the case for shielding purposes.

Great pics, I'm sure this one can be traced from these without to much trouble. Aftter a very quick glance over the overlay photo, the tone section looks like it might be based on a baxandall type. I will have a closer look at the photos later.
I take it the components that have no yellow or other colour lines marked over then al go to ground ?

It's fairly straight forward, if you want to start it , press start. You can work out the rest of the controls for yourself !

Yup. The one's that don't go anywhere are to ground. I've gotten to the tone control and so far it's pretty standard Muff. I'm guessing the tone stack is an active Baxandall. I'll finish work on it later tonight. This should be a quick trace.

Had a little look closer at the tone and it looks less like baxandall type and moreof a standard 2 pot marshall/fender style. It looks a bit mixed up the way I have drawn it out at the moment. I will try and get a clearer drawing.mmolteratx wrote:Yup. The one's that don't go anywhere are to ground. I've gotten to the tone control and so far it's pretty standard Muff. Ya, it looks a lot like a Brownface type tonestack to me.

Yeah , it's getting closer. The tonestack is very similar to the Fender 6G8 tone stack blonde twin with a slight diffeence.mmolteratx wrote:Ya, it looks a lot like a Brownface type tonestack to me.

I'm thinking it's Baxandall now, can you check that there is a connection between the two caps that connect to each end of the bass pot . (you have one going to the centre of the pot but the other cap doesn't if i follow the yellow lines) I think this cap must also go to the centre connection of the pot as well. If so then we have a baxandall for sure.

They connect. I missed that trace.

It's definitely a Bax.

Mostly done. I can't seem to find the emitter or collector resistors for Q1, though the rest is finished. I'll start drawing it up on the PC in a minute. It's basically a Muff with the tone control replaced by a Baxandall stack and a source follower after the stack. I'm going to remove the jacks to see where these traces coming off of the collector and emitter of Q1 are going.

Tricky bastards. Full schem will be up tonight.

The reason I hate that ground is because of the oxidation, corrosion issue.Grounds should ALWAYS be connected either mechanically(nut ,bolt and star washer) or by solder. Just because something looks slick or cool means it's worth a shit. I think it's lazy and any builder of any electronic equipment would call it what it is ....bullshit.

Done. See the notes.
