JHS - Superbolt [traced]
Hey un autre quebecois !
Thcustom sells them
http://diy.thcustom.com/shop/rog-suprea ... -v1-1-pcb/
Ordered some a while ago.
Its from a runoffgroove schem that jhs stole for mass market .... as they do xD
Dont remember if the shipping was expensive!

3 versions from JHS , this should sound good,
just ordered the pcb.
any particular points to keep an eye for this build?
I think i should ajust the pot for even clipping, (top and botom clipping to occur evennely) instead of 4.5v
using a scope and a generator. we'll see.

Ah ben Ciboire.
The board from THcustom is all assembled and running.
I end up modifying it to be more like the superbolt. oupss.
R1 replaced by 0.022uf
C1 : replaced by 1M resistor.
R10 pot replaced by 50K
R3 replaced by 1k5
R5 replaced by 3k
this is to add gain and to stay away from self oscillation by reducing gain of Q2 stage and increasing gain of Q1 stage.

Disturbing that Bugg says "Compare to JHS Superbolt" without giving recognition to ROG. Seriously, man, don't abet the dark side.Bobbyd67 wrote:A ben tabarnak....
Pedalpcb will have a pcb too soon xD

could be from here but who knows lol
1-I saw in many topics about the jfet bias adjusting by ear.
Someone measured by ear and after measured the drain voltages too?
My jfets only sound good at:
Q1 (J201) 16,5V
Q2 (J201) 10,5V
Q3 (2n5457) 13V
I think that these values is incorrect, fake jfets?
2-When a change the hi/lo Switch, apparently nothing change in the sound, there is a way to measure if the 120k resistor on/off is working correcly?

Yeah that sounds a little odd. You should definitely hear a change with the level switch. Where did you get your J201s from?
Hi Andy!
I bought my J201 on a store here in Brazil.
The label of J201 is BA17 J201 - Fairchild, apparently brilliant background.
I changed the 4n7 capacitor after tone pot for more tone control, but i dont like the result.

Good chance that they’re fake. I bought some online that were cheap, but looked right (Fairchild). I thought how different could they be?
I didn’t realise quite how bad they were until I got hold of some real ones. The real ones fire up and sound great, lots of gain. The fakes didn’t have anywhere near the gain and sound weak and thin by comparison.
My favourite J201 based drive is the Fairfield Electronics Barbershop. Check it out if like the Superbolt.

Oi, another Brazilian here
Can't comment on your JFET's being fake or not - just try a bunch of them from different sources - eventually you'll find the ones that work.
About the tone pot on the Supreaux/Superbolt: I find the tone pot to be really lame - I know, it was wired like those old Supro amps, but, at least in a pedal format, it doesn't sound that effective (most generally too bright for me).
What I did here was disconnecting the stock tone pot and wiring it just like the tone pot on the Wampler Plexi Drive: a 10n capacitor and a 25k B pot to ground in parallel with the master volume (output) control. Works much better and you gonna get extra gain.
