And yes, I've read the de-gooped threads and non of them seem to deal with anything close to what's used on the Sex Drive.
West Systems Epoxy might be excellent quality, and might have great mechanical properties, but the only concern when it comes to gooping and degooping is the temperature it breaks down at.
I don't see anything to indicate that it's better than, or even as good as the Epoxy most builders use.
They don't have actual Data for Max Temp on their website that I could find, but they do comment that Extended Temp above 230 degrees is considered Damaging Temp. (http://www.epoxyworks.com/23/pdf/04-Heat.pdf)
A lot of builders use something like JB Weld, and JB is a High Temp Epoxy that can handle 500 to 600 degrees F.
JB will go soft and powdery when heat is applied and can be removed pretty easily, so I can't see that West System would be any different, and probably not as good.

AFAIK, there isn't an Epoxy available that will handle higher temps, or that won't break down when exposed to high temp, so I think you're making assumptions about the West Epoxy that aren't right.

Didn't someone already point out a picture of a Durham board with the Epoxy removed anyway ?
Nope, no one has been able to de-goop this one yet. Must be because the epoxy used for gooping is so easliy removed. :whappen:

Whatever..
If it hasn't been degooped it's simply because no-one who has an idea what they're doing has done it.

If you have any info that refutes anything I've said.. please share..
:thumbsup

BTW - You did see the picture of the board on the 2nd page of this thread ?.. and the comment:

"Interesting ... the soldering iron seems to turn the goop to fine powder, instead of melting it as I expected.

It is coming off, but a very slow process.

The PCB came off the enclosure during the process, so here's a shot of the bottom of the pcb:"

Pretty much as I explained.. right ?
The fact that "aloupos" didn't follow through here doesn't change the fact that he removed goop.

If you want to send me a Sex Drive I'll de-goop it for you free of charge.

Why yes, the lack of photo's or a schematic are a direct contradiction to your claim that it should be easily de-gooped.

And calm down Greg. 8) I'm not trying to start an argument with you. I've just never run into a pedal gooped in this mannor and though I would talk it out on the forum. But if the moderator of the forum itself it going to get pissy over it then I'll drop it.

The lack of photos and schematic mean that no-one has bothered to degoop this pedal and then post it here.. that's by no means proof (or a "direct contradiction") that it can't be easily done.

My main concern was how to de-goop without destroying the circuit/components? Any thoughts?

Interesting. Al tho both those products are safe for the molded epoxies used in IC's they will both dissolve thermo plastics. Wouldn't that include caps? You might be able to some values measure them in circuit but it seems like you'd destroy more components then you'd be able to identify?

Has anyone here actually de-gooped an epoxied board?
Seriously ?
There have been dozens de-gooped and revealed on this forum.

There is a lot more discussed in the thread I linked to than a couple of chemicals.
I read the tread and most of the techniques only seemed applicable to softer materials. What I'm saying is I believe the epoxy used on the Sex Drive is of a much higher grade then the stuff used by other pedal builders. But I could be, and often am wrong.

lol.......not to put a too fine of point on it but the hard stuff tends to be the easier to work with because it crumbles where as a hards rubber stays pliable and in tacked.

hey greg,

i'll send you my sex drive if you want to de-goop it and post pics of the board. how long do you expect it will take?

best,
mrhenry

Hi McHenry

It won't take long.. but be aware that I'm in Australia.
I'm happy to reverse it and share it here, and would cover shipping back to you if you decide you want to send it.
Being realistic, I imagine it would still be around a 4 week process with shipping.
If you want to pursue the idea, drop me a PM

Greg

hi all,

I have been moving for the past 3 weeks... very arduous... from hell really.

So, I haven't had a chance to make arrangements to send the pedal to our Australian friend. However, I will try and make arrangements this week and we'll see if we can finally de-goop this bastard!

Man I would so buy one just to have it degooped. Phibes seemed to rock the degooping. Just give me the word and I am buying a donor happily.

Unless of course degooping is already underway.

de gooping for me has never been much of a problem but the time constraint is my factor right now working a full time job and full time business just don't have the time to tear it apart. i have listend to this thing in person and online is it really that much of a request i have heard a simple compressor do the same things
