Death By Audio - Harmonic Transformer [ugly guts]

Postby culturejam » 16 Oct 2009, 01:44

This shit is embarrassing. I can't believe these guys are still in business. I really, really hope this is some kind of joke and that I just fell for it.

I snagged these off TGP in the for-sale section. I'm no law-monger, but I'm pretty sure this little educational post falls under "fair use" in US Copyright Law.

WTF?!?

My dogs could make that with the leftover Rat Shack crap I have laying on my bench......embarrassing indeed.

It doesn't even have a DC jack so the poor person who buys the thing is at some point forced to open it up and see what a pitiful product they purchased.

Seriously. How do these rim-jobbers keep selling pedals for big money?

I normally try to avoid name-calling and personal attacks, but if that photo is legit (and I have no reason to believe it isn't), then Death By Audio are really really really really not nice guys and probably are mean, too. [self-edited because of member complaint]

And a Smallbear single-sided perf board? For $300???

That's just an insult.

I'm tempted to buy one so I can take a dump in all that extra space and mail it back to them as an improvement to their craftsmanship.

I'm assuming however that this is one of the earlier ones, as they seem to at least be using PCBs nowadays.

...however the PCBs are still probably floating in enough space to make a Tokyo-dwelling salaryman green with envy.
I'm going to start using enclosures that are no smaller than two stacked Concise Oxford Dictionaries. Maybe then I can "make it" in the boutique world!

This is where I'm confused. I thought the current trend in boutique pedals was to make them as tiny as possible.

Half as many parts as the Fuzz War but twice the price? What is the circuit?

My thoughts EXACTLY.

The switch, jacks and battery really put thing in perspective.

So what does a "Harmonic Transformer" do to the sound of ones instrument?

It's an unimpressive gated-sounding fuzz.

To me, their graphics make their pedals look like toys or something not to be taken seriously. Then, when one has a look inside....

It makes me grateful that FSB exists so I don't fall for this stuff.

Well, I for one dig the graphics, at least.

Apparently the battery is held in by cellophane tape. Personally I like to wrap my battery in that rubber no-slide shelf paper and then hold it in place with electrical tape. In true DIY style.

I didn't know pedals were something to be taken seriously, not toys, etc.
