I believe the 2N5088 is used in the relay bypass circuit and the layout is designed for a simple mechanical true bypass.

The SFT can do some pretty cool light drive sounds, and it can go into crazy fuzz territory if needed!

Unfortunately, no. The "G" is roughly the same as "W" as far as the taper is concerned. I've had no luck at all finding 10k-G pots, but 20k-W works fine. You may have to adjust the 3k3 resistors (R52 & R54). Good Luck!

I should note that I replaced the tone switch with a 100k linear pot and I used BC109's in place of 2SC539's. Could those changes contribute to the lack of volume? It sounds great, but it's just kinda quiet.

I always thought it was a kinda "symmetrical asymmetrical" clipping. The NPN stage adds a bit of weird asymmetrical clipping to the positive phase of the signal, then the PNP stage adds the same asymmetrical clipping to the negative phase. Also, if you haven't already heard of them, check ...
