A really simple mod would be to try increasing the 4n7 cap on the collector of Q2 (blaniks schematic page 2). Sounds like an interesting variation on a theme.

I have uploaded a schematic based on the vero layout and information on this thread.

It includes a Trimmer (500K) from Q1 Base to Ground as recommended earlier.
