13 volts will kill a 1044 a lot faster than I can type this. They are rated at 10v max.

2n5089 has hfe from 400-1200. should be fairly easy to find one in the proper range. And they are low noise.

If you don't use any shielding for the ldr/led combo, your status led might cause problems (depending on the kind of socket you use), because it might light the inside of the enclosure a bit. Damn, where's the edit button. phibes, when I say positive or negative battery, I am referring to the battery terminals, nothing else. Hook up the meter normally it's +9v. Flip the leads and it's -9v. Just a matter of where you reference.

No, the board is still positive ground, external is wired negative like everything else in the chain. I have had no oscillation problems this way.
