dap9, i am thinking that you must have a wrong value(or values), or something miswired, or something broken.
On a stock build, with the gain control turned down all of the way, there should be practically no distortion. You shouldn't need to alter the circuit from its stock design for less gain.

Re: Not a stompbox, but interesting. (Electrix Filter Queen)
Here is a new link for the images(they are zipped in .rar format) : http://www.mediafire.com/?woidb9c6gly7yx6
They are not really very excellent pictures, but my ancient camera doesn't really allow much more than that for detail/clarity, unfortunately.

Hmm, it was a .zip, not a .pdf, but yes, the link seems to have expired.
If i can find/remember where the hell i put those images, i will try to re-post them.

Re: What Amp to build?
My favorite build so far was putting the vox preamp from an AC30 into a pair of cathode bias 6V6s. I like a low tube count and a basic sort of structure, so i actually did the full AC30 top boost, with an IRF mosfet for the cathode follower. That worked out very well for what i built. Two 12AX7s, Tw...

Re: Need a bit more from my 18W.
18watt.com has lots of info. The subject used to come up often there, so a search should provide lots of thoughts. Depending on how much more will be *enough* more, you could get more dirt out by adjusting values. I didn't spend that much time on that myself, as the pedal solution was sooo much quic...

Re: What to build around a 5k primary OT???
A pair of 6550/KT88s with a high B+(like 600v-ish) will give you about 100w into a 5k OT. Just check the data sheets for the details. http://www.nj7p.org/Tube4.php?tube=6550 Or you could go the oversized OT route with a pair of 6L6GCs for 50-60w with more like a 450v-500v PT. There are lots of thing...

Re: Crowther Audio - Hot Cake Overdrive [traced]
I don't think i have the Torchy one anymore. But here is the vero for the '77 version that i used when i made mine: http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/ulysses/ulysses_layouts/77OldCake/ulysses_77_oldcake_1_01.gif.html It is a good layout and an easy build. That is definitely a one of my fa...

Not a stompbox, but interesting. (Electrix Filter Queen)
I picked up a few different Electrix effects back in the late nineties when guitar center cleared out their stock of them. https://img820.imageshack.us/img820/3681/electrixfilterqueensmal.jpg This one is my favorite of them. A very cool filter, with some nice features and a very nice sound. Anyhow, ...

I don't know about either of those vendors you mention, but IIRC Madbean(a member here) sells a Fuzz Factory PCB for a good price. EDIT: Yeah, here: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/projects/index.html It is his project named "Zombii" The rest of the parts, i would just source from Small Bear ...

Re: two kits, which one?
The Fuzz Factory is a good time. You can get some almost "normal" fuzz sounds out of it, and you can get some interesting octafuzz sounds out of it, and then you can get all kinds of wonderfully screwy velcro fuzz and bizarrely arpeggiating octave down sorts of sounds, and then a whole uni...

Re: Zvex - Fuzz Factory [traced]
I realized the other day that i had most of the correct bits to do one of these, so i popped one together yesterday, using Torchy's old vero layout. I used NTE102As for the germaniums, but otherwise stuck to the correct parts. I really enjoy it much more than i was honestly expecting to. It is capab...

Back on topic: Should the bass and treble pot be linear? They now seem to work only one third of the full sweep. Or this normal or have I made a mistake somewhere? Thanks! They should be audio taper, i think. Make sure that you have them wired "backwards". They are utilized as "cut&q...

Re: Paul Cochrane - Timmy [traced]
Well for that matter, thanks to the internet, anybody can appear to be an authority, write anything (true or false) and post it for the world to see. It doesn't mean anything. I can't tell you how many pedals I've bought based on stellar reviews on the various sites only to find out that they are j...

Re: Suhr Riot [gut shot]
Also, I think a 386 or 308 into a 4049 would get these kinds of metal sounds pretty easily. I haven't built anything with a 4049 yet. How do they clean up with the guitar volume? That is one of the things that i like about the FET boosted 386 style of high gain building. With the volume rolled off ...

Re: Paul Cochrane - Timmy [traced]
But by that reckoning exactly the same negativity could happen if someone uses exactly the right components as specified by Paul, but then does a crappy solder job, or just builds it wrong. And the worst part is that the cloner can say, "Well it's accurate because Paul Cochrane told me". ...

But I don't want it being built wrong either... I meant to ask you about that in the past, and you've just reminded me. Why don't you want them built wrong? Putting myself in your position, someone griping about a Timmy clone not sounding like the original, or that a copy sounds bad, gives plenty o...
