Re: Univox - Univibe (Uni-vibe)

IT'S ALIVE! Imagine that, the pedal which completes the circuit.... makes all the difference. Spent the last two hours playing the thing. Into a Rat, sounds great. Into a Muff clone (starcaster distortion) sounds freakin' awesome. I took a little time to try and dial in the same sound into my DOD Vi...

Re: Univox - Univibe (Uni-vibe)

Well I have an original Univibe on my bench. Sadly no pedal. Unit doesn't seem to work, but do I need the pedal to fire this thing up? With the LDR cover off I see a dull glow in the bulb, but no pulse. Flicking the power switch off and on shows a momentary brightness but nothing like I think it sho...

Re: Guitar Shielding and the Capacitor argument against it..

Why would you want to measure anything? Because that's how we prove or disprove hypotheses. Because we understand that our ears and brains are terrible instruments. It's a unproven theory, based upon observations made by hands on repairs. An "unproven theory" is a hypothesis, and yours is...

Re: Guitar Shielding and the Capacitor argument against it..

Why would you want to measure anything? Guitars aren't made to be analyzed, they're meant to be played. If your guitar is humming then it needs shielding, or a better ground or something is broken. I've rebuilt many guitars, none of mine are stock, and repaired many for my friends and for a local sh...

Re: Guitar Shielding and the Capacitor argument against it..

So the tone could possibly change with shielding, but it doesn't seem to be an issue of capacitance as much as an alteration to the magnetic field around the pickup. That sounds like a reasonable theory. But you'll have to explain how a static paramagnetic material creates a significant influence o...

Re: Guitar Shielding and the Capacitor argument against it..

Sorry you took it like that.... it's more like the math would be wasted on me. I do go by what I've done and what I've heard. I believe experience should weigh in as more than just fingers in my ears. But you are entitled to your own opinion. I suppose when confronted by the onslaught of life some f...

Re: Guitar Shielding and the Capacitor argument against it..

Haha yeah like I can hear which direction the pickup is wound...No but the sound of them in pos 2 and 4 are different precisely because of the interaction between the pickups magnetically - on or off the magnetic field is there, pull the mid pup out and listen to the positions 1 and 5...different! ....

Re: stupid pedal trick... vcr motor bow

Crazy... I saw the bow and thought about something that happened today... The battery was dying in my ebow. IT WAS AN AWESOME SOUND! I think I'm going to mod my ebow with a small pot, a bit of double stick tape on back of the pot and it's mounted on the outside of the case of the ebow. Roll it back ...

Re: Guitar Shielding and the Capacitor argument against it..

The tele plate observation mentioned by *Moonwatcher* holds some water because the plate is close to the winding and flux lines would certainly make a path part way through the plate so the choice of metal would have some effect, maybe not much but likely measurable. As for the Strat 3rd/middle pu ...

Re: My strat wiring problems (tone/volume crackle)

yep sounds like bad solder... forcing the pot to turn is probably letting the wires make contact... a cold solder joint will do that.
this is another place that quality materials help. I use silver solder, tin my wires and flux my joints prior to soldering. Quality solder joints shine.

Re: My strat wiring problems (tone/volume crackle)

What quality of pots did you use? Always use the best you can afford, this instrument is where it all starts. If your wiggling the vol pot shaft, and it moves in the pot, it's time for a new one.

I've been searching around for a tube head or combo that will push a cabinet... something with massive headroom...
priced around 400 bucks... this pricks selling $50,000 amps and crying... I feel no sympathy.

It needs a major overhaul... caps are the old cardboard tube jobs... the wiring that's not cloth is cracked, no turrets no boards , all point to point, it's a birds nest... I'll get some pics, you guys will dig it.

no... wish I had one... I've heard rumors of a schematic on other forums, but some people act like it's a big friggin' secret. Years ago I had it, original was stapled to the inside of the cabinet. I've been looking for it for a long time, that amp just sits waiting for....

Re: Intermittent Amp failure

The cats on the MusicMan Amp forum suggest recapping all the electrolytes for the same reason, drying out. They say a bad cap can take out a transformer, so that's why I'm worried. So a bit at a time, and if I have to replace one or both transformers... so be it. I love this amp that much. It plays ...

Thanx for the schematic... I have it already. Ernie Ball has them all archived. haven't had a chance to fire it back up after cleaning, but I did a visual and like I said it's all good, I have a BRIGHT light and magnifier on my bench (helps my old eyes) I don't use the effects loops but cleaning the...
