Re: Milbert GAGA-90 Transformerless Tube Guitar Amp
sorry but hifi doesn't necessarily just mean frequency response. Of course some people prefer the saggy slow transient and recovery response of lo-fi and under performing transformers... but not everyone. Also just because the response capability is there doesn't mean you have to use it. There's muc...

Re: Where to by those bigass ceramics?
you can look for a 1kv rated c0g are k7r. that will come in the size you need.
I know sprague made a bunch of ceramic caps like that. I got a whole bunch in an estate sale at one point.

Re: The 'Sound' of Capacitors..
condensor describes what it actually does...
so does thermionic valve.
capacitor and vacuum tube describe what they are.
I'm surprised the the US retained resistor for resistor.
much better if it was something non-sensical like dustohmbrick.

+1 to fiveseven and diagrammatiks... but why do some folks keep using water to make a statement? Current is flowing but its not water, its created by a string vibrating in a magnetic field. Maybe the electrons aren't going thru the caps and I don't care about the math either. I learned ohm's law in...

so the engineers are the cork sniffers? how about that? apparently. @artifus: Oh, I see now. More on this later. @telecaster: You have missed my point completely . In my foray into the minds and culture of modern musicians I have identified the source of our woes, of the confusion and woo-woo that ...

Re: The 'Sound' of Capacitors..
The problem is that there aren't many builders or people equipped to do any sort of real comparisons in controlled situations. The datasheets put out by companies do definitely show functional differences... tons of white papers were published when polycarbonate went obsolete like the one wima publi...

Re: The 'Sound' of Capacitors..
I don't know what you just said One does risk becoming cryptic when trying to be thorough yet concise. So let me offer an example: We use a large electrolytic coupling cap with some huge equivalent series inductance such that its impedance "inverts" within the audio band, say at 5 KHz. Th...

Just rewired a VHT Special 6 Ultra. Get rid of the fixed tone stack first (the owner wants a "Tweed" amp) Then, replaced the caps with Mallory 150 and one single PIO in the tonestack) Night and day. If you can't hear differences between at least some caps : go test your ears, or put your ...

Re: Fryette Effects SAS EF86 Overdrive [traced]
man they have some nice toroids. wish there was something like those over here in the states.
for your power supply. you only need 8vdc for the op-amp.
just run a bridge rectifier and a big cap.

Re: Basic tube amp question(s)
The TC rating doesn't mean anything.
those power amp stages are configured for voltage gain.
if they were current drive or transconductance amplifiers it would be a different story.

Re: Fryette Effects SAS EF86 Overdrive [traced]
except there's a set of clipping diodes right at the op-amp output. That's fair, and not to be literal, but you said op amp, not diodes...that said, those diodes could obviously be easily snipped by anyone. If rail-to-rail clipping ensued, gain could be re-configured for clean gain only. To me, an ...

Re: Fryette Effects SAS EF86 Overdrive [traced]
shame about the op-amp infront of the tube. the pentode circuit is pretty textbook. Without it, there would be no way to hit the tube any harder than your pickup's with the volume pot maxed. The op amp is an easy source of clean gain with some EQ shaping to follow with a volume/gain pot to control ...

Re: Basic tube amp question(s)
it's a differential pair. that's reasonable. not sure how well it functions as a phase inverter. As another note, that's the only marshall schematic that shows the particular PI circuit. The other 20 watt marshalls are different... but people have built the 2061 of that schematic so it ought to work.

Re: Basic tube amp question(s)
Mh, I don't see where the PI is DC coupled. Input is _after_ the decoupling cap of the previous stages, and it's ground referenced through the vol pot. (A common practice) Also, it's not really a LTPI, (it lacks the "long tail" for that), it's just a commond cathode ("self-splitting&...

Re: Basic tube amp question(s)
hmm that can't be right...there should be another cap at the pi input.
It's not set up properly for a dc coupled ltpi.
as it's drawn the other side of the pi has no bias.
