Re: New Vertex Stuff. Anyone open any of them up? [traced]
Interesting. i wonder if the new Ultra Phonix OD is a variation of the same basic design. It's also being marketed as a Dumble sim.

Re: J Rockett - The Dude (gut Shots)
Not all the op-amp stages may be in use. IIRC, the Blue Note only used half of a 4558. Another possibility might be a charge pump. Also the Dude's "ratio" control is supposed to be a clean blend. I guess a dual gang pot might be a clue. Just a guess but Rockett has had a lot of success wit...

Re: Dumboid clone fail [traced]
My first post here. I stumbled on the Dumbloid/Big Bloom phenom late last year. The samples I saw on youtube sounded pretty okay. I built mine on a tonepad ts-808 board since I've built quite a few TS varients and have several unused boards. I used the tonepad schematic that had the new Dumbloid va...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
It's pretty clear that the second stage LED isn't doing much at the minimum accent setting of 1k (stock TS value). Why not put the first stage LED's on a switch so you could get both the "stock" Dumbloid sounds as well as the smoother CJOD tones from your pedal. You could even do a 3-way l...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
This is kind of interesting. I did a little shoot-out last night between a Dumbloid-mod SD-1 and a GGG Red Llama clone and was able to get very similar tones, using the guitar's tone control to trim the highs a bit on the RL. The D-mod Sd-1 was a little more sensitive to pick attack but the RL had a...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
By the way I left the single LED in the second stage. It only conducts when you turn the tone pot way up. Ripdivot, would it be too much trouble for you to also do a clip with the LED lifted? Aside from leaving the 3mm LED in place, you've pretty much reduced the Dumbloid to a YATS with what are no...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
What I really find curious are the posts where guys have tried every possible combination of clipping diodes and it apparently hasn't helped. It seems like converting the pedal to diode clipping would solve the problem if the rattle was indeed a product of op-amp distortion. If someone was to repla...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
Enough talking about the farty decay, I thought it was time to record it. The following clip consists of 3 parts. The first section is played through my dumbloid clone on the breadboard with a strat through a deluxe reverb reissue dry with no effects or processing. The second part is played through...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't lowering the value of those resistors give Q1 and Q2 a much hotter bias? Do you suppose the designer is using them as boosts or to contribute to the distortion in some way? I've read in a couple of earlier posts that these changes seemed "arbitrary" but...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
I don't understand the purpose behind the lower values of the biasing resistors for Q1 and Q2 (150k and 100k) on the D'loid and BB. Has anyone tried the Tube Screamer value of 510k for these? It seems possible some weirdness might be occurring there.

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
400hz HP filter and an Eternity-like 7k tone control. It would be easy to take the things you like about the D'loid and add them to the Tube Screamer of your choice.Ripdivot wrote:The dumbloid does have a nice voicing though.

Re: Mad Professor Simble [traced]
That shot of the corner of the board with the transistor and diodes is interesting. Looks like a series resistor combined with a diode (D1) and the transistor. The other diode looks to be labeled D8 and may serve a different purpose. So what are we looking at; a buffer w/ protection diode or maybe h...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
I think I'm hearing something a little different. The 3mm LED seems to decay faster than the op-amp clipping, making a transition from fairly severe asymmetric clipping to the op-amp's more symmetric sound as the note fades away. If you look at the accent control, you can see how it's being put to c...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
A small cap across the 3mm LED seems to help smooth the decay a bit.

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
I tried blue and red leds in both the first and second stages in all sorts of configurations and they helped a bit but the fizzy decay was never totally gone. I don't get it because other pedals with leds in the feedback loop don't seem to have this problem. I need to isolate what stage is causing ...

Re: Dumbloid [traced]
You might also try lifting a leg on the 3mm LED just to determine where the fizz is coming from. It's still part of the circuit even at the minimum "accent" setting. The accent control should still function as a second gain control without it.

Re: "Dumbloid" mod for the Boss SD-1
Doh! You're absolutely right. It should have read "remove D4, D5 and D6". Forgive my error.Manfred wrote:Which schematic version are you referring to for applying the mod?
The part identifiers for clipping diodes at the original schematic are D4, D5, D6.
May you add the matching schematic.

"Dumbloid" mod for the Boss SD-1
This mod is in no way intended to be a clone but will give up some of the OD tones associated with the Dumbloid and Big Bloom pedals. I've stripped it down to as few changes as possible, using only common, Radio Shack parts. Here are the changes: Remove D1, D2, and D3. Do not jumper C2- .1uf film C3...
