Re: Catalinbread - Katzenkönig [traced]

Also built storyboardist's layout and it sounds good. There is a little hiss if turned all the way up, but it's to be expected as others have said. As a side note, I opened up a friend's production Katzenkonig. The actual trannies are BC550B, but I built mine with PN2222A's and it actually sounds a ...

Re: Fuzzhugger - Algal Bloom [gut shot] [traced]

Well here's a start. I'll need to either desolder the pots for a better shot of the back layer, or trace it out and correct the schematic. More to come later.

Oh, and all the 100K pots are log taper.

Re: Fuzzhugger - Algal Bloom [gut shot] [traced]

I've got one laying around somewhere that I can take apart. IIRC, the trannies are 2N5089s, C3 is a 2.2uF (all the .1's are correct), starve is actually a 100K (weird value for a starve pot), and gain is a 500KB set up as an input level control. I'll grab some pics and resistor values when I get a c...

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]

Sorry, just added C20 to the post above. It's 47uF.

If we're good with the trace, I'm gonna put this thing back together and grab drain voltages - although I'm sure they're 4.5v since that "amp" stage is a PlexiDrive.

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]

So the JFET section is just a standard Plexi-Drive... Looking at the PlexiDrive schematic, the cascaded JFET stages are almost identical - except the "gain" pot is now "fuzz" and the "tone" pot is now "bright". Time to get out the breadboard out and get ready...

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]

Nice work! I'll get the cap values and drain voltages sometime in the next day or two - been a busy work week.

I'm curious about the optoFETs as well - maybe a fancy way to prevent popping when switching between the two?

Sure, just let me know what you need. I'll leave it apart until we have a good trace.

Re: Klon wiring/debugging. aka I'm a total noob.

Another good thing to have is a "test rig" with in/out jacks and power connected to a breadboard. It lets you test your builds before you box 'em up and have to desolder to troubleshoot. Here's mine - janky but it works. http://www.mikeballard.org/img/testrig.jpg Here's how to build an aud...

Re: Klon wiring/debugging. aka I'm a total noob.

If I may add something. I have very little activity on this forum, but I participate quite a bit on other DIY forums. Rather than putting this off, I would recommend making yourself an audio probe, getting out the schematic and tracing through the circuit starting at the input. This will give you an...

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]

I'll get the cap values up later - may have to do some desoldering to get to all of them.

Here's a better front and back ...if this doesn't help, I have a 12MP camera I can try with.

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]

Yep, happy to. I'll get to it sometime this weekend. I wanted to re-solder those pots anyway. As it stands, with everything tightened up, the board-mount jacks don't perfectly line up with the holes in the enclosure, so it puts a bit more tension on the PCB than I'm comfortable with. Sounds fantasti...

Here's a start. Forgive my lack of photography skills. I'll work on the cap values, since they're a bit hard to see. http://www.mikeballard.org/img/100_5747.JPG http://www.mikeballard.org/img/100_5748.JPG http://www.mikeballard.org/img/100_5749.JPG http://www.mikeballard.org/img/100_5750.JPG http://...

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]

Just picked up one of these. I'll get you guys some better shots up sometime over the weekend. The trannies are J201's but mine are actual TO-92 packaged rather than the SMD version. The white "ICs" are H11F3 optocouplers. The IC is an LM386.There also appears to be a 2N5089 that's part of...

Re: One-Knob Silicon Fuzz - Universal Layout

For anyone interested, I recently took apart a Black Arts Toneworks "Ritual" Fuzz. It's a little throatier and has a touch more low-end than the COKF. The values are same as the Colorsound except for the following:

R4 - 2.0K
C1 - 680n
C2 - 150p
C6 - 100u
Q1/Q2 - TP2222a
