It looks like an Envelope Generator that shapes the instrument's envelope characteristics to be whatever is determined by the controls. Right. The best option is to use a non carbon wirewound 100 ohms between A and B,
so there will be no noise when the slider of R4 is turned up all the way to the last .1% of Rd
for Q1.
