A true Rangemaster is not a distortion device but a treble booster. The output should not be distorted.

The circuit around the second op amp is just a Baxandal feedback tone control and is correct.

You could have fake J201s. They are not being made any more. You really need some test equipment if you are going to DIY and a multimeter is essential.

How do you know its a silicon transistor? Germaniums were available in plastic packages like this - I have some. What is the type number?

Dont worry about it electrically they are the same - it usually means it is made by a different mfgr and some times the leads are a different orientation eg. instead of emitter base collector they are base collector emitter.
