Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
HEADS UP!! If you built your own DLS the instructions for the mod should be lugs 2&3 of the gain pot. Same as the 47p cap. On Nics site the two lugs identified in the pic are lugs 2 & 3 not 1 & 2. The pic is correct, just not the lug #s Dude treble bleed should be on lugs 1 & 2!!! I...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Hey so I figured it out.... fuzz face worky better with 47p than 5000p. I think for playing without stacks in front the 5000-ish pf is the best, but with fuzz and stuff the low range values work the best. I did try the 1uf input cap on the card and it didn't fix the woofing out so I went back to th...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Somebody who wants cloth wire, tropical fish caps, and NOS unobtanium semiconductors is NOT going to be interested in Catalinbread products NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY SOUND! Nick, I really like your philosophy and love your prices. They are very reasonable and look to be well-built quality products. 8...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
I lost pad 2 on the gain and had to jump it. The pot had a 47p cap across 2&3 and it snaged the pad on the way out. I'm sure C-bread will warranty that for me :slap: Ack wat'd you do that for buddy? I probably won't cover the warranty but if you need a hand getting it back together feel free to...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
How would one calculate the corner frequencies of the 100pF and 5000pF? We just went empirical, though curiosity of specific frequency is bugging me. Nic, the corner frequency will change with the setting of the gain pot and will be set by the resistance of the part of the pot that is in parallel w...

Thats correct. Just make sure the positive side faces the direction indicated on the schematic.

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Hey Alf... I don't think that part of the FS.o schematic is correct. I should have looked more closely from the get go. Q6 Gate needs to connect between R17 and C13 keeping R16 where it is. :thumbsup Hi Nic, I didn't quite get it because Q6 gate already seems to connect R17 and C13. So I went back ...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Nic has suggested a mod on his site to add to the treble bleed cap value another 5000pf, slightly more gain and bigger sounding to my ears: http://www.catalinbread.com/odds/bunker.html :thumbsup Howard came into the shop yesterday with this idea. Turns out it works great! Just in time for the new P...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret
also the 10M on the gate yeah..keep all the components of the DLS block only remove q3 and q6 and add that 1k source resistor..the other values you changed are a bias thing, but since the DLS sounds nice as is..if you want to try to the reduce the noise from the voltage divider then change the two ...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret
Seishin, Didn't you miss the second biasing resistor (1M) to ground on the second stage ? And talking about biasing resistors, I would like to try the circuit adapted to the R.G. Keen's option on Geofex of a noiseless biased SRPP amp. You can leave out the two sourcefollowers if I am correct. And i...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Awesome, thanks. I plan on making one for a friend's b-day and he's a Strat guy. :applause: Feel free to try different values. Ceramics do not like to be much higher than 150pF cause the grit they add seems to accentuate the upper frequencies. Silver Mica seem to be a bit more forgiving up toward 2...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Nicholas, would using silver mica for all the caps make it sound even better than using a combination of SM and wima? Are there 0.047-0.05uF Silver Mica? WIMA have a bit of a hifi sound to them. Metal Film are better than greenies and WIMA for the DLS application. IMO, the greenies don't clean up a...

Re: Catalinbread - Dirty Little Secret [traced]
Helge, The highend thing - I know what you're talking about. This is typical of ceramic caps and for most applications the grit helps cut in the mix. Though it can be refined by using Silver Mica for the 470pF 100pF for the treble bleed cap and WIMA 0.047u & 0.022u for the coupling caps. We're a...
