Re: Menatone - None More Black [traced]
I don't remember where or what site/store it was but the pricing for one thru-hole Jfet can be that and higher. Especially for the small signal/low level audio type. I have never shopped on E-bay before and I don't even have a cellphone. I built a Sabbra Cadabra workalike device and I had 4 2N3823 N...

Re: Menatone - None More Black [traced]
I got my SMD J202's from one of the big American suppliers. I didn't want to pay 5 or 6 dollars for thru hole. Digikey, Mouser, Newark, etc but I can't remember which one. Sorry no sound samples but it matches what I've heard on youtube. Has a very cranked amp like feel under the fingers. Kinda squi...

Re: Menatone None More Black [gut shots] [traced]
Built one up on double sided perf using JOK3RX's schematic. Turned out very well and runs off an 18 volt wall wart. Had to use SMD adapter boards for the J202's otherwise was a pretty smooth build and it sounds the business. Thanks JOK3RX for the nice PDF schem and lay-out.

Re: Your favorite soldering irons/stations.
I like the Hakko FX-888D and the Weller WES51. Each around 100 in American dollars. Lots of tips availiable. I use mainly chisel style tips in the 1.5 to 2.5mm for my pedal stuff. I don't know much about SMD though. All my projects are turret board or thru hole.

Re: Mosfet Muff (kind of)
I appreciate the suggestions Moonwatcher. I also have used BC550C with good luck. As far as the impedance goes its something I've only read about on mosfets. I 'm a noob at electronics so I can't give any facts or numbers. I would compare the noise to be similiar to a good Russian Big Muff clone.

Re: Mosfet Muff (kind of)
I also got some good ideas (a lot of ideas) from Fred Briggs "ONG" or One Knob Gilmour. That effect is all mosfet. I'll have to build that one as well. Maybe I'll like it more.

Re: Mosfet Muff (kind of)
I wanted to increase the input impedance of the effect. I've read on these pages that a normal muff has a low impedance front end and that contributes to some of the noise in the circuit. Q2 and Q3 were kept stock because I wanted to keep the basic character of the effect the same. In this version t...

Mosfet Muff (kind of)
Playing around on the breadboard today with some inspiration from the Skreddy "Top Fuel" and the Zvex " Machine" . I came up with this basic modded muff. A mosfet on the input and on the output. Its a very modded SHO style setup with somewhat standard muff stuff for Q2 and Q3. Pl...

Re: Mountainking Electronics - Megalith [traced]
I used BC337's and had no problems. Also used a ultra bright blue LED. My layout looks a lot like schematic. I tried to keep the main signal flow going in one direction and mine is very quiet with no noticable gating or hiss. Also BC337-25 have a gain according to DCA55 to be about 280hfe.

Re: D*A*M - Greasebox GB-83 [traced]
Just boxed up mine today. Added a 3.3meg anti-pop resistor on input. For Q1 base I used 470k and 51k. Q1 volts are C=8.8v B=.9v E=.35v. Q2 volts are C=1.44v B=.55v E=0v. Sound pretty close to online samples Also Q1 BC547B hfe 260. Q2 BC337-25 hfe 320. Hfe measurement results from 2 cheap multimeters...

Great thread. Thought I'd post my build. Q1-2N3904, Q2-BC337. Input 22nf and a 47nf output cap. Added a 1K pot for fuzz control.

Re: Mountainking Electronics - Megalith [traced]
I was puzzled why mine did not work. I'm a touch colorblind so those metal film resistors are a bugger to read. Thanks for the revised schematic.

I can't proof it. Sorry. I owned one for a while and it was the best chorus pedal I ever had ( in hindsight) .

Re: Recommendations for new manf. tubes for cathode follower
Like you say its probably a branding issue on or with the tubes. This isn't a hard failure (smoke) certain new tubes just degrade quickly. Older fender amp designs were known to push the limits of tubes back in the olden days. So some of todays new tubes can't take strain. Blackface Deluxe Reverb ou...

Re: Recommendations for new manf. tubes for cathode follower
I admit my post isn't as articulate and to the point as it should be. My vintage RCA's 12AX7's have lasted darn near forever in the cathode follower position of the the tone stack. The Sovek WA's last a long time as well but I have a hard time getting them. When I had tube life issues I called EHX c...

Recommendations for new manf. tubes for cathode follower
With my Tweed Bassman reissue and another clone circuit tweed bassman I own I've found that some new manufacter 12ax7 's don't last very long or at all in that circuit position. Heater to cathode voltage is to high. I've been told most modern preamp tube use a spiral filament and those types have a ...

Re: JHS Morning Glory [traced]
Is there a technical description on why the MMK type cap are not so good? I'm only a noob but I've used them in a few builds with no issues. My main point being I got about 100pcs for cheap and If their prone to failure or generally problematic I'd like to know. No financial loss for me but I'd rath...
