Built it without and got no sound (9v has nowhere to go), then looked closely at a pic of your build and you've got a 100R in R24...

Well, tried approx. 30 J201s, sourced from a few different suppliers, and just can't get the bias of Q1 close enough to 6v, nearest is 6.4v. I'm experiencing similar results with the Sag pot. With the volume constant, the Sag at minimun (full counterclockwise) yields the most output.
