Re: Looking for Iskra Polystyrene Caps

Sometimes I wonder what people would be like if they put as much effort into positive aspects of their their life as they did trolling message boards.

Best of luck with your cap search, Guava. A quick internet search reveals those are indeed pretty rare these days.

FYI - That vero layout above shows a 10uF electro where a 4.7uF would be on the schematics I've seen. Was that a mistake or did they actually use the 10uF as an alternate part?

Zombie post I know, but I just found my PCB for this stashed away. Anyone have the BOM saved and/or any other files? The site is dead and I can't seem to get the Wayback Machine to pull what I need.

Re: Just stepped in it! 2n5133's

For gain buckets I'd go under 150, 150-300, and 300+

That would cover you for most uses without getting OCD about it.

Re: Just stepped in it! 2n5133's

Those aren't that uncommon, but high gain batches are. Skreddy explains his search in a few threads here. Most of the ones I've used were ballpark 100 hfe. That's not to say you can't build a low-gain Muff, but gain testing would still be a good starting point.

I had the same issue when I was looking around a few days ago, with no luck. I'm also in the U.S. If you find a supplier of the .15 stuff, I'd be interested as well.

Re: EarthQuaker Devices - Hoof Fuzz

You'll notice a difference with your GE trannies from gain difference alone; those will be ~ 1/4 to 1/3 of those 5088's you're using. The case being made was that germs were not worth the cash because you can also get low gain silicon for much cheaper. It wasn't stated that clearly, but that's usual...

Re: EarthQuaker Devices - Hoof Fuzz

He gets a little cranky from time to time when boutique pedal builders put out a decent sounding product that people actually use and shows up in photographic evidence. There's nothing wrong with your plan to try germs and LEDs. The Muff circuit has tweakability that could last you a lifetime. While...

Here's a pic of one of the early boards to confirm:

Also, I don't own one, but rather just saved a bunch of pics a while ago because I'm a fan of the Muff circuit.

Re: EarthQuaker Devices - Hoof Fuzz

Sounds like a good plan overall. This is on my never-ending to-do list. I believe those LEDs are red water-clear in the new ones. The older models had straight-up red diodes, so I would assume they kept with something with a similar forward voltage when they went to water-clear. I'm not sure if that...

Re: Skreddy - Screwdriver [traced]

I've finally had the solder flowing the last few nights, and this is one I've had a board populated for since last year. I used Soulsonic's PCB with very-mojo recycled components, to go along with the vibe of this pedal. This thing is killer. I just tossed in a BC109 and AC127 and it took off. I'm f...

Indeed the coolest new DIY pedal idea in a while. Congrats! Heading out to my workshop in a bit, where over the summer I have been saving some thin slivers of various woods: spalted maple, birches, swamp cedar, etc. I'm thinking some of that combined with this technique could yield a very cool looki...

Re: Skreddy says: "Caps matter!"

When I was building my Mayo clone I was very skeptical that transistor types played a huge difference in Muffs simply because the distortion is not set up to come (mostly) from the transistors being overdriven. But in reading dozens/hundreds of Muff threads and having ordered over a half-dozen types...

Your work is much appreciated, Modman. I haven't had time to solder, but when I get a few seconds of downtime I habitually check this and lust over what will someday be on a breadboard or aluminum box on my floor. In the spirit, I'm going to go bottle and drink some homebrew. Thanks again.
