Re: smallsound/bigsound - mini [traced]
FYI, I picked up an actual SS/BS Mini, and that pedal just rips. So versatile! I still want to attempt building one, but now it's not as big of a rush since I have the real deal! Way to crush this one, Brian! thanks! :D Yeah toss a 4001 or a 5817 in there for sure. According to the schematic on pag...

Re: smallsound/bigsound Team Awesome! Fuzz Machine [traced]
Built this using MP38A transistors and I can get a wide variety of tones that sound great! Just one question: the Gate function sounds like I remember it sounding (an ex-band mate had a TAFM on his board), but engaging it seems to max out the fuzz. Is this normal? I used a BAT41 and a 1N5819 for th...

Re: smallsound/bigsound Team Awesome! Fuzz Machine [traced]
Alright cool. I've been trying to buy one used for a while, almost had one on ILF but the buyer decided to keep it! ;) I play 7 and 8 string guitars a lot now and this fuzz just sounds so good with bass and ERG's so I'm kind of lusting after it again. I have sacks of PNP germaniums lying around, bu...

Re: smallsound/bigsound Team Awesome! Fuzz Machine [traced]
Any hFE reports from a working (Consistent gate function) NPN version? :) I have been looking at this one for quite some time. honestly, i never really got super consistent results using the gate on with NPN germaniums which is why i very quickly switched back to PNP. it was only one small run wher...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
Just discovered this awesome thread. I was going to attempt to build this little monster, but had a question first. What is the minimum voltage on the 220uf cap? I have some of those cool low profile Lelon caps, but they are only rated 10V. I'm not sure how to tell from a schematic what the voltage...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
Hello everybody. I wish to start the realization of the mini but I"m a little lost in the indication of the transistors .. On " bubstance" post.. Q1 2N5089 Q2 J201 Q3 2N5457 Q4 J201 On schematic Q2,Q3, Q4 2N5457T Q6 2N5089T On Brian post "i use J201 for Q2 and Q4, 2N5457 for Q3&...

Re: smallsound/bigsound Team Awesome! Fuzz Machine [traced]
i own the original SS/BS PNP version (that also has two internal trimpots) and built the NPN version posted here. it works and sounds great, but the gate doesn't work like the original. it does affect the nature and sound of the fuzz but it doesn't gate. any ideas about that? did you get it going? ...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
Sweet. Fixed my schematic (attached), I deleted the 4.7k resistor (R24) since presumably that's for the LED which will be on my switch breakout (offboard). 8) ss_bs6.jpg Cheers, Brendan errrr not exactly. ripup the connections you just made to that 220uf and BIAS1. BIAS1 should not be connected or ...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
Alex's vero board layout has a LN5817 in place of the original diode: http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.ca/2016/07/smallsoundbigsound-mini-overdrive.html Perhaps I should be asking him haha. I combined the 10K trimpot in series after the 10k bias as recommended, do the pad numbers corresepond to the ...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
First off, much thanks for the schematics Brian! Secondly, I've noticed that there are two pads, namely 'PAD1' and 'PAD3' that are unused (or don't show up) in other people's layouts - what are they used for? I've included my schematic below, D3's LN5158 was replaced with a LN5817 (now D2) as seen ...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
no worries! just fyi if you change the bias points of the first and/or second jfet specifically, you may or may not have issues with the main bias knob at lower settings and/or with low bass settings.

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
I etched and built up storyboardist's PCB and it works great so it's verified. what bias voltage are we looking for on the Jfet's. I have an original 125B MINI but i'd prefer not to take it apart to measure them since the legs on them are so short. cool! yeah it's a simple little build so it should...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
Thanks Brian for sharing with us! Here's a perf and PCB layout for those interested. All pots can be board mounted and you might be able to squeeze it into a 1590B (though I agree with Brian, 125Bs are best). nice! I'd socket the drain and source resistors, measure the component values and pick the...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
Verified a vero layout of this on Guitar FX layouts posted by Anders in the contributions section. Awesome overdrive. Thanks Brian for the schematic. cool! oh sorry there is one small error in the schematic which is important - BIAS in the schematic is a 10k TRIMPOT. the actual BIAS control that is...

Re: smallsound/bigsound mini [traced]
alright, sounds like there is interest. i'll get on it this week. the layout i use is a little weird so i'd rather make something new that's more DIY-friendly. i can make one with 2 PCB mounted pots like the way i already do it - then you wire 3 off-board pots. in my experience, a 125B is the best c...

Damn, Brian, you really are the actual fucking man, aren't you? So what's going on in the "high gain/scramble/octave" mod on these? I've seen you offer up info for the DIY inclined, but never had a mini to look at for comparison. nah just figured i'd save everyone some time. uuuh le...
