Re: Bearfoot - Model G [traced]
Has the power resistor R15 @ 470R been confirmed? Seems odd as every other Bearfoot pedal with this same topology indicate 47R. In my build R15 @ 470R drops the supply voltage down to 8.2v, where 47R gives around 9.1v And considering the other versions all have the same R13 Q3 drain resistor value o...

Re: Pinnacle/Sovereign - to much sag
Thanks Phatt! Had tried 10n for C4 and removing C3 all together. Neither helped with the "splat" itself. And it happens in the lower gain switch setting too, when R3 and R9 are not engaged. I've also swapped jfets, socketed and tried other values for every coupling cap. Nothing helped with...

Re: Pinnacle/Sovereign - to much sag
Cool, thanks brejna, will try that next.
I'll switch in a 33k between the 470R and 22n cap.
BTW, the low end "splat" only happens when attacking the strings hard.

Re: Pinnacle/Sovereign - to much sag
Thanks Satch, sorry I should have mentioned I already tried a charge pump 9v/18v "sag" switch, did not resolve the low end clipping.

Pinnacle/Sovereign - to much sag
As I understand it, high output pickups can cause to much sag with the Pinnacle and/or Sovereign. Brian's suggestion (a few years ago) was to lower that guitar's pickup height. What would be the best approach to simulating lowering the pickup height, by limiting the input signal without killing the ...

Re: Bearfoot - Model G [traced]
Does the 5k6 drain resistor bias the "3rd" 2n5952 at the typical 4.5v?
I'm limited to using 2n5457 smds, which measure all over the place.

Thanks for the power supply tips.
Question, does your pedal squeal with feedback when the gain switch is set on high, presence on, and gain knob past noon?

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
I just found this video this morning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJrzs4lyfmE So it seems the high gain flabbiness and squeal are built in to the original pedal after all. The high gain mode demo starts around 23 minutes and the squealing about 24:35. Looks like high gain on, variac off, presenc...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
Yeah, and I'm not so sure it even sounds like a plexi as it stands. I boxed it up, maybe the squealing is a bit better. The high gain switch is a bit over the top for me, I still need to check the high gain setting with lower gain knob settings and/or other clipping positions. Maybe there is some us...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
Frank_NH, question: Any idea how much gain is eaten up in the presence section, if at all? With the gain switch set at highest, source resistance to ground for the gain switch stage is about 97R. Looking at the spreadsheet provided (thank you!) I think that indicates with an 18v supply, that stage w...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
" I'm not sure why they have two identical gain stages in series - maybe that's part of the secret mojo." That was going to be my next question...why identical gain stages in series? But some progress: (circuit was in my test rig and exposed, not boxed up or fully shielded. Boost mode was ...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
As always, thanks for the help guys. I agree 53R seems like a suspect value, but surprised no one else has mentioned it...or the squeal I had actually placed a 82R and 150R in parallel to achieve the 53R. Will try a higher value tonight. I have a gut feeling this will resolve the issue. Thank you in...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
Not luck so far. For completeness regarding the gain switch hookup: I have one end of the 1k and 100R resistors tied to the source of BS170, the other ends are on lugs 1 and 3 of an on/off/on switch, with lug 2 tied to ground. The resistance from the source to ground is 5k1 in the center postiion, 9...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
Thanks again, I have the LT1054 for the 18v, and tried a 2nd LT1054 in the 9v position. No change. I also shielded all the wiring, again no change. I have to think there is a component error or a wrong value somewhere in my build because it squeals like crazy with the gain switch in either "on&...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
The re-wiring of the boost control per the manfred schematic update seems to be an improvement. Thanks again. I just noticed I'm getting a loud squeal with the gain switch in either outer position, in the center off position sounds fine. Squeal changes tone when in 18v mode, but gain, quiet in the c...

Re: Bogner La Grange [traced]
Manfred and Chewy, thanks for your notes on the Gain and Boost pots, my experience had been exactly the same. The gain and boost pots were acting more like switches, either nothing or full on. I have also upped the Gain pot to 50k log and the response and available gain is much improved. I was still...

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]
Thanks Indy! What though me was with the fuzz inputs bypassed, the "plexi" engine sounds great...and quiet, so I had assumed the jfets were fine as is. I ended up increasing the big fuzz C10 from 4n7 to 10n, which tamed the hiss a bit without killing the fuzz. I also added a LM386 noise re...

Re: Wampler Velvet Fuzz [traced]
I have built this with the plexi/fuzz switch option. The Plexi by itself sounds killer, but when either fuzz is engaged there is a noticeable amount of hiss induced. The tight fuzz is the worse of the two. Is this added noise "normal"? I've tried 3 LM386N-1, all about the same amount of no...
