Re: UK Fuzz zine - Good Fuzzy Sounds!

ah - the 80s! [irony warning:] weren't they great?
I started on music zines in '84, then some comics and weirder stuff, until about 10 yrs ago - this is my first proper zine since then. Thanks for the order!

UK Fuzz zine - Good Fuzzy Sounds!

Hi all http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6033/6243901045_eab930fbfe_z.jpg I've written and drawn a zine, all drawings, no photos, 28 pages of fuzz and more fuzz. There's a big 2-part history article centres around 1960-62 leading up to the Maestro Fuzztone FZ-1 and the London scene in 1964-65 leading t...

Re: WEM, Watkins, Rush - Pepbox, Rush Pep Box [schematic]

Thanks for confirmations - I thought the layout was ok, but tried 2N270, OC71, 2G381 and didn't get far.
It's simple enough so I was dismayed at lack of success - will try again! Maybe i've got a short or something...

Re: WEM, Watkins, Rush - Pepbox, Rush Pep Box [schematic]

Anyone tried this yet? I've built it but it has very low power, tried it with various Germs, no fuzz or fun. Is there something special about these transistors that other Ge PNPs can't match, or did I just do my layout wrong? It's been a while since I did one... I'm using a 50k pot for Pep/Attack an...

Re: WEM, Watkins, Rush - Pepbox, Rush Pep Box [schematic]

Wow - thanks guys! I feel ridiculously like it's xmas in March, as I only just saw the Music Ground guts pics yesterday, on their ridiculous £2K Pep Box auction - so much fun to have a 'new' circuit to build - and I do love ye olde 60s fuzz. I don't have much time at the moment, but will be on it so...

Re: Maestro - FZ-1 [schematic]

what is the hfe of your current transistors? - i think i got mine going with around the 70-90 range, they don't have to be high gain (or leaky) in my experience. i was never one for checking voltages though. it's not really like a "proper" fuzz sound, you should get crude blasts of blatty fuzz, with...

Re: Pep Fuzz?

I guess the Fuzzy and the Pepbox might not be related after all. :hmmm: I was (and still vaguely am) in contact with Pep Rush - he confirmed that he made the red Fuzzy pedal, but the chronology is definitely strangel. I was going to meet up with him to find out what happened with WEM etc, but I thi...

guilty as charged - I noticed this mistake some time ago, but forgot about it again - final correction done! remember - blue border = wrong, purple border = right http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4005/4329619267_e4184ff6c5_o.jpg Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1correct schem by simonm1965 , on Flickr Here's my c...

corrected Maestro FZ-1 schematic? [schematic]

i don't come around here much anymore, but here's that amended schematic again - my old image host died http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4005/4329619267_27de1a3983_o.jpg I got a bunch of NOS 2N270s from Langrex in the UK, but none had gains over 80 - I can't find a full data sheet but the min hfe is m...

Re: a good UK hammond distributor?

Eddystone are a branch of Hammond IIRC, and their boxes are pretty much the same sizes, but not sure of the codes.

Rapid has them, cheaper than Maplins

Re: Buzzaround Transistors

where do you live? Small Bear sells sets of 3 for the 3-knob Tone Bender, which is similar to the Buzzaround, so those would probably be good http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=11 Or you could by a few Russian ones on ebay for less and just try them - there's thread on here about Germanium t...

Re: Baldwin-Burns - Buzzaround

hello, i have got myself a buzzaround CLONE i am fairly happy with.. ..but (always a 'but' haha..) if i had one complaint, it is that mine is quite 'hissy' I'm pretty sure the hiss would be from the transistors - you can test for gain and leakage, but AFAIK not for hiss in old transistors... If the...

Re: Maestro FZ-1 on Turret Board!

I just built an FZ-1 on turret board for a friend. It turned out GREAT! I used the original schematic with the corrected parts values that Modman has posted in Wiki article about the FZ-1. .... The trick seems to be to have fairly leak-y transistors for Q2 and Q3 to help it bias rightly. Photos and...

Re: Maestro FZ-1 on Turret Board!

FWIW I think that was a fairly accurate reissue, and at least some of them are meant to be good, but Gibson chose (?) the 2nd version from 1965, the FZ-1A (3 x 2N2613, 1.5V), rather than the original version from '62 (3 x 2N270, 3V). I think it was on eyelet board though, just looks like turrets in ...

Re: Maestro FZ-1 on Turret Board!

I built one of these on vero a while back (from the bad schem) and it didn't work at 3v atall, but sounded good with a 9v battery... yesterday I added the missing 470K and it's a monster! I got some black 1950s 2N270s off ebay a while back - they are low gain (about 40-50) but with very low leakage ...
