Re: Word to the wise - EL84 content

I will NOT use ANY Russian tubes for any of my amplifiers or customer's repairs Did you try SED Winged C tubes from St. Petersburg, or is this opinion based on the Reflector Corp. products made in Saratov? All the St. Petersburg tubes I've tried have been excellent, and I've also had good experienc...

Kicad. Like Eagle, but it is better, free and open source.

SM Fuzz

It is a boutique style Fuzz Face only it is made by an engineer. Microcontroller transistor bias circuit for temperature compensation. Two separate boards, one on each side, hanging from an Alpha pot and a Cliff jack. RoHS except for the AC128 transistors. Low profile IDC connectors and smt technolo...

Re: Commonly Used Resistor and Capacitor Values in Pedals

The major cost of a pedal is the time spent working on the pedal. This work includes things like parts sourcing and researching circuits and schematics. Do you want to offload this cost by making people on this forum do this work for you? Wouldn't it be more productive if you opened all the schemati...

Re: ross phaser in 1590a - SMD content

I like it!

Are you using 0.5mm or thinner solder? Seems to be quite a lot of tin happening some places in there.. thinner solder makes it a lot easier to get good results.

Re: Skreddy says: "Caps matter!"

So again, we arrive at the same old juncture: Different cap types make a difference in sound. Somehow. In some applications. But the sound difference is difficult/impossible to measure. But easy to hear; but difficult/impossible to describe in words in any meaningful way. But definitely different. ...

Re: Skreddy says: "Caps matter!"

Capacitor distortion manifests itself by adding harmonic content to the signal. Capacitors don't work with sound waves, this is about electrons and signals and physics and shit. mictester, you obviously have access to the internet. You should try downloading and reading a capacitor data sheet. The p...

Re: Skreddy says: "Caps matter!"

As an engineer I am firmly of the the belief that capacitor types don't make enough difference at audio frequencies to worry about, but I am always willing to admit I am wrong if proven so. Did you bother reading http://waltjung.org/PDFs/Picking_Capacitors_1.pdf yet? As an engineer I think you'd fi...

Re: Skreddy says: "Caps matter!"

I think duckman is onto something though. We've established that simply building (or breadboarding) two versions of the same thing with different caps would certainly lead to different sounding circuits, which no one can really attribute to either part tolerances in the resistors, pots, or even tol...

Re: Skreddy Cognitive Dissonance MKIII

I remember a site like the one you mention, with x-y oscillograms showing polys with nice and straight lines and tantalums and ceramics with oval lines. I can't find the site now, and I forgot the url to put into the Wayback machine. However there are other scientific sources, like http://waltjung.o...

Re: Boss Hyper Fuzz (FZ-2)

The FZ-2 will never be found on the shrine of the Tone Gods. It does full-on chainsaw fuzz tones, and that it does perfectly. There is no point in modding it, because its already as good or bad as it can be. Reworking the Fuzz I channel into a Superfuzz is just a thought experiment, and not somethin...

Re: advice on grounding a vintage amp

i don't care Look, I can also quote out of context. I was stating two proper chassis grounding procedures for IEC Class I, not giving a talk on the relative merits of chassis currents in vintage amps. There should be no currents in the IEC ground under normal operating conditions. It should be wire...

Re: advice on grounding a vintage amp

The IEC chassis ground is supposed to be on its own bolt with nothing else attached. This is to eliminate the possibility of forgetting the chassis ground after working on the equipment. Remember: chassis ground is a user safety feature, while the circuit ground is there to make the electrical circu...

Re: Boss Hyper Fuzz (FZ-2)

To mess up your valuable pedal all you need is to reference a Superfuzz schematic and alter the highlighted areas in the attachment accordingly.

Clippers: D4,D5. Change to some nice germaniums.
Notch filter: Cut, replace and jumper.

Then move the output to the output of IC1a. :|

Re: Boss Hyper Fuzz (FZ-2)

why, because it's got a differential amplifer? i'd say the two have MUCH more that is different than they do alike. you would hardly be able to modify a superfuzz into an FZ2, you'd be much better off just building one from scratch. Because in my opinion the business end of the FZ-2 - the octave an...

Re: Boss Hyper Fuzz (FZ-2)

Your best bet would be to sell it, as it is very popular with the stoner/doom crowd (check out Electric Wizard) and it can do a lot of the Korn/Deftones sounds. Ugly and heavily used items can still fetch some good money. Behringer SF300 is a plastic clone of the FZ-2 (which is a modified Univox Sup...
