Re: Ibanez SM-9 / Maxon SM-01 Super Metal [schematic]
Thanks Dirk, I found everything. It seems like diodes are the ones to go after. So I think I'll socket them and experiment for a while. I'll post back what I find.

Ibanez - SM-9 / Maxon SM-01 Super Metal [schematic]
I looked everywhere but I can't find a schematic for this one. Does anybody have it?
Any suggestions for mods? It would be nice to get a bit more volume out of this thing. The drive feels a bit fizzy as well. Not very responsive
Thanks to all!

Re: Boss LM-2B Bass Limiter - Looking for schematic, mods... [schematic]
Ok, here are the promised sound clips. "Always on" setting http://www.sendspace.com/file/gpzypq : I call this "always on" because there's only a tiny bit of limiting going on and it's set at unity gain. It's all very subtle and not like an effect, hence you could always keep it o...

Re: Boss LM-2B Bass Limiter - Looking for schematic, mods... [schematic]
Thanks for the help. I tried what you suggested - 22K in series with a 1M trim - but I found myself turning the trim almost all the way down to get it to sound good. So, in the end I decided to take out the resistor and just put in a 200K trim. I set it less than a quarters up and the pedal sounds n...

Re: Boss LM-2B Bass Limiter - Looking for schematic, mods... [schematic]
I bought the service notes for the LM-2B from someone on ebay and thought it would be appropriate to contribute to the archive here. There seems to be quite a few changes from the previous model (the one that's posted above). I'm not great at reading schematics but I think I was able to locate the &...

Re: Interesting opinion on Jimmy Page/Early Zep Tonebender-FZ-1!
Just to add to the mystery :P , in the movie "It Might Get Loud" Jimmy Page says that Roger Mayer built him his first fuzz pedal. I ripped that section of the DVD and uploaded on youtube. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWCZLC4Lkeo Interestingly, he then steps on a Sol...

Re: 'GLOBAL CAPACITOR SHOOTOUT'
I'd say that within 1% of the value is good enough, come on let's get on with the build! I was trying out some caps in a big muff tone stack today and I could barely tell the difference between 0.01 and 0.012. That's 20%. Even if we assume that the 0.01uf was actually 5% higher, that is 0.0105, and ...

Re: 'GLOBAL CAPACITOR SHOOTOUT'
I don't see what's wrong with the rotary switch. All capacitors in a given set would be connected to the same switch so there are no extra components. You don't even need extra wiring, you can just solder the caps to the switch lugs.

Re: Boss LM-2B Bass Limiter - Looking for schematic, mods... [schematic]
Thanks a lot Mozwell :) It's not the same pedal but I'll try to work around it. The real difficulty is locating the "release" resistor on the LM-2B. If I knew which one it is I'd replace it with trimpot and tune it by ear. Unlike the LM-2, the LM-2B has no release knob, so I'm not sure whe...

Re: 'GLOBAL CAPACITOR SHOOTOUT'
I agree that simplicity is the best strategy here. It would be fun to test a pedal with 2-3 rotary switches, after that it might get confusing and you'd drive yourself crazy trying out all possible combinations. I'm not that experienced to suggest which capacitors in the circuit would be the most in...

Boss - LMB-2 Bass Limiter [schematic]
Hi there, I recently picked up this bass limiter even though I'm a guitar player. It sounds surprisingly transparent and noise-free compared to many other compressor/limiters I've tried, so don't pass it up if you see one (they are kinda rare). And now I immediately want to mod it of course :D I thi...

I second that, let's go for it
I would be happy to put aside some time for the test and record some samples if needed. I have a decent setup at home and it's always on.

Re: The "Sound" of Capacitors..
Sorry for the confusion guys, yes these were the tone caps in a guitar not in a pedal. The very first post in this thread links to a premier guitar magazine article about the differences in guitar tone capacitors which piqued my curiosity. Based on what parts I had at hand I thought I could run a si...

Re: The "Sound" of Capacitors..
Ok, here's the inside scoop on the clips I posted. The two values were 0.01uf and 0.022uf. The two types were the Mallory 150 series that are available at Mouser, and the ones that came in the mylar capacitor pack from Futurelec (I don't think they are branded). Ok, so they are both film caps and th...

Re: The "Sound" of Capacitors..
Ha, ha ha :D . I guess I'm selfish in that way too - it's MY tone - but what I was trying to get at was that if this capacitor testing pedal gets off the ground and we end up with some test recordings, whether we should put more weight on the views of the people who actually play in these clips or t...

Re: The "Sound" of Capacitors..
It's definitely true that your playing dynamics affect the sound of the recording in a big way. All 4 clips I posted sound different because I simply cannot play the same exact thing twice. So you kind of have to "average" out the performance while listening and making a judgement. I too f...

Re: The "Sound" of Capacitors..
Just to clarify, there's no file compression on the clips I posted. They are wav files bounced from Logic. I'll wait a bit more until we get more comments and then I'll give you all the details, along with my opinion. By the way, it helps to listen with headphones - that's how I recorded and auditio...
