Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Hello again, First of all, Happy New Year to all. I haven't been posting for about a month because I started Googling for additional information and eventually decided to educate myself first, before posting and participating in this forum. So, I started as a newbie with minimal knowledge of electro...

Multimeter Recommendations

Greetings, I'm new here and also new to electronics. I couldn't find a better forum to post this question... I would like to ask seasoned electronics guys for a recommendation on a multimeter. I searched a lot (amazon, ebay, allelectronics.com, etc...) and can't really find one that I think would co...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

My bridge piezo is sandwiched at the base of the archtop bridge, with epoxy. Now I understand that I would have been better off using some kind of material that becomes like rubber when it dries up. Can anyone think of a material that I can handle like glue and then dries up into rubber? Actually, ...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Just to get back to the previous discussion about piezo pickups... Again, Phil, thanks for explaining all that. Some of the earliest barcus berry piezo PU's where simply a G type clamp that mounted on the side of the body of a guitar and (If I recall) you could alter the pressure and position of the...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

OK, I read more about OP amp theory and I now understand the logic in the data sheet phrasing, so I understand that you're right. Most of the theory is still too difficult for me to process and absorb as I'm reading it, but I think I'm making progress. In any case, thanks for taking the time to expl...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Unused input is pin 2, which you have taken to ground. Hm, I still don't understand the way the techs have phrased this on the data sheet. They say that at higher gains it is necessary to bypass the unused input by connecting a cap or by shorting it to ground. In all their diagrams (even the one us...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Thanks, again. This is, once again, informative. So, all the people that post 386 amp circuits they claim they've "designed" are just copying what's on this datasheet? LOL I just noticed that some were using some capacitors for some pins and others weren't so I was just combining things fr...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

OK, so I have some issues to discuss about piezos (after reading the above post and linked article) but let's keep it one thing at a time. So, here's the schematic for the amp I breadboarded. https://dixieguitars.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/386-amp-v1.jpg Although it's far from being a great soundin...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Rather than cutting the piezo output could you make/find plastic covers for the wound pickups and print Altoids labels and glue those on (and clear varnish over the top) so they still look the same but don't attenuate the signal? Makes a lot of practical sense, but in addition to the comments I mad...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

This is a very informative post, for someone like myself, who knows very little about electronics. I'm really more of a mechanical DIY-er. Thank you... Re piezo problems ; You likely need a isolation pad of rubber between the element and sound board. Wouldn't the rubber layer result in more muffled ...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Thanks, guys. Well, now that I have a bunch of old TV speakers I did some more experimenting, breadboarding circuits with LM386 and now I definitely found a simple circuit that sounds much better than the Marshall MS-2. I am now only playing with various configurations of connecting a 10K thumbwheel...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Well, I promised to post some photos, so here we go. I didn't build any of the amps, yet, so I'm posting some build photos of the guitar. First, the entire wooden part of the guitar is made out of scraps and wood that I picked out of dumpsters. Also, some of the hardware is assembled from garbage (t...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

This is a very Interesting thread, I start thinking about this and had some ideas... Thanks for joining in. I also had a MS2 and the difference between clean and overdrive was really a problem... Thanks for explaining the theory behind it. Since I'd like the built in amp to be ready for a Thanksgiv...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

Using ferrous metal for the covers is going to shield the strings from the magnetic field so attenuate the output signal. Isn't there some plastic or nonferrous box lid you could use for the covers? I guess it would take some looking around to find plastic candy boxes/covers that would be the appro...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

I don't think you're going to find a battery powered tube circuit with allot of clean headroom and volume, Even if you keep asking , you know, physics ! Darn physics always get in the way of what I'd lie to do... Question... I found some schematics of battery powered tube amps that have a voltage b...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

I have my doubts about a built in amp and speaker/s. If you get enough volume to be useful you will probably be close to getting feedback because of the vibrations transmitted from the speaker to the bridge and pickup. I have the same doubts, absolutely. At some point there will be feedback but I'm...

Re: Building a kid's tube amp

In light of the events in Paris, I simply didn't feel like spending time on any online forums, for a while. I did make some progress, though. Since I live in a big city I can eventually find practically everything on the streets. In the past couple of days I went around my neighborhood, on my bike, ...
