Re: Mesa Boogie Tone Burst

Not verified yet but it should work. I hope! I changed the diode arrangement a little but that would be easy to change back to original. It shouldn't make a huge difference either way.

Re: Mesa Boogie Tone Burst

Just a query - Looking at U1B are you sure R4 goes to Pin 6 and not Pin 5? I had a feeling it should go to Pin 5 but I may well be way off course!

Thanks!

Re: Mesa Boogie Tone Burst

Thanks for tracing! It looks a lot like a mash-up of Xotic AC/RC Boosters with a hint of BB. I wonder why they felt the need for two ICs? Surely this could be done with one.

Re: Lumpy's Tone Shop - Lemon Drop [traced]

I'll have to go back and compare. I think they sounded quite similar with pregain all the way up but personally I think the pregain is kinda useless. The sound is very "transistory" and harsh where the 3-knob is pleasantly primitive in that old-school Led Zeppelin way. I have no idea how t...

Re: Lumpy's Tone Shop - Lemon Drop [traced]

I honestly don't know. I drew these from a trace at Guitar FX Layouts. There is a thread on the forum there.

Re: Lemondrop? [traced]

Quick note for the 3-knob version - the trimmer spans 4 rows, not the usual three! It's easy with the trimmers i use to bend the middle leg a bit to make it span further. You can see I have tried to indicate that in the layout. It shouldn't make contact with the row above.

Re: Lemondrop? [traced]

I have drawn vero layouts for both versions - FWIW I think the 3-knob version sounds better. I added a bias trimmer too. Easy enough to leave out.

Re: Suhr - Eclipse [traced]

Thanks! So you could possibly build a decent overdrive pedal from this schematic without using the buffer? Or is it necessary to keep things from oscillating?

Re: Suhr - Eclipse [traced]

Please excuse my ignorance - I looked up OPA171AIDBVR and found that it's an op-amp chip. What role does it play here? I see that all of the operating voltage for the circuit comes from the OPA171AIDBVR so assumed it must have been some kind of charge pump but it seems that it's not. So what does it...

Re: Kingsley Page Gutshots [traced]

Does the input really go directly to the grid? Shouldn't there be a 68K resistor or similar in between? Or have I misread your schematic (entirely possible!).

Re: Rams Head Big Muff FS36999 hFE measured

I used to make the diodes switchable. Reason I stopped is that with higher gain transistors the change was not so noticeable - definitely it had an effect but I always prefered the lower gain setting anyway. And while it's more noticeable with lower gain trannies I still prefer the lower fuzz setting!

Re: Rams Head Big Muff FS36999 hFE measured

I have built various versions of Big Muff with lower gain transistors - 2N2222A and 2N3904 - and really liked the results. But then I usually play them at lower gain levels, ie gain not much further up than 8-9.00. The lower gain trannies give a smooth, fat buttery sound rather than the buzz saw of ...

Re: Mythos Chupacabra [traced]

FWIW I built one based on my drawing just to be certain - and I am still amazed at how blatant and exact the copy is - and yup, the Chupacabra is definitely a Red Llama. I swapped the 68nF cap to 220nF and it sounded a little better but still thin, buzzy and not really very exciting. Oddly enough th...

Mythos - Chupacabra [traced]

I recently bought a Mythos Chupacabra - the soundclips online sounded good and everyone I asked who knew of Mythos pedals said they were very good. It is sold as "the sound of early ZZ Top Billy Gibbons" - hey, I like those sounds! So it arrived, I plugged it in and was soooo disappointed....

I don't mind the asymmetrical clipping but tried it with 2 x 1N4001s and 2 x 1N4148s (one of each on each side) and liked it better.

Re: Greer Lightspeed

While I'm not a huge fan of the Timmy it's still a beloved pedal of many for good reason. The Lightspeed seems to be a way of taking a revered pedal and making it less useful. I built one to see what the fuss was about and found it altogether underwhelming. I'd take a Timmy over the Lightspeed any d...
