Re: JCM800 as preamp

I recommend to run Marshall on 11 with your fav. 4x12" and to use a H&K Red Box 4 or similar device for sending the output signal to the mixing console and/or another poweramp.

Re: Okko - Diablo Boost+ (goop pics!!) [traced]

The newer D. has the charge pump circuit, the older didn't and the same with more drive feature. Any CP circuit (from the Centaur or other FX) can be added in front of the BIAS devider. I would drop the more drive circuit, IMHO there's no need for it and for me it's overkill in this circuit. Catelin...

Re: Lovepedal - Eternity [traced]

The E. is a bland TS clone with a similar sounds. IMHO sounds best paired with Fender BF amps and Fender vintage guitars. Every TS-mods can be performed on the E., so it should be no problem to reduce gain and midrange to personal taste. You will get this open sound by cranking the amp to the verge ...

Re: Barber - Direct Drive [traced]

The newer DD has basicly the same circuit layout as the LTD. Take the LTD-schem and replace the section between the opamps halfs with a hardclipper wired to Vref and a tone control similar to the RAT and you have 98% of the DD. Some Rs and Cs have slightly different values, but with those gutshots t...

Switching is done via SN74HCT74 (like in some other FX).
BTW: Someone elsewhere claimed that it's a 1:1 copy of the T.C.J. "Gristle King".

Re: Ibanez - SD9 ( Sonic Distortion ) [schematic]

In the SD-9 a lot of headroom is killed by the switching circuit. Furthermore the flip-flop softens the tone. If you build a SD clone from the schems floating on the web it will sound different, harder with more headroom. Compared to other 4558 the JRC4558D adds mids and compression to the tone and ...

Re: What's the point of a tube rectifier in Class-A amps?

In a small class A amp (like Champ, Princeton") a GZ34 tube rectifier will not alter the tone or imply any "sag", 'cos the rectifier tube will always deliver the current needed w/o any voltage drop. If a Si-rectifier alters the tone in such amps, the reason is that it raises the DC supply voltage a ...

Re: Carbon Composite Mojo?

True... but can you hear a difference between 0.12dB and -0.16dB [/quote] You can hear a difference in sound if a LP guitar is wired old or new style. In theory there should be no difference, you can't measure different values, but you can hear that tone nuances and timbre are different. A pia...

Re: Carbon Composite Mojo?

There's a simple formula for caps ans resistors in audio stuff: different material = different sound No mojo, just a matter of personal taste. Often you find CCs in military and industrial stuff. Due to vibrations the boards are stressed a lot and CCs are not as fragile as other Rs and won't fail un...

Yes folks, it's a Centaur-clone.
A bit deeper voiced and slightly more rude than the C. Only very few parts are a bit differnt.

Re: Danelectro - Drive ( Cool Cat ) [schematic]

The forward voltage of a diode used as a clipper does not tell anything about the clipping or the sound. Diodes with a forward voltages of app. 0,6V can produce really different distortion. The protection diode in a BS170 for ex. produce a harder/rougher sound when used as a clipping diode compared ...

Lower hFE = less fuzz
Hfe of the 2nd trannie is not that important (60 -150). If the bias is set right for this trannie a FF will clean up immediately.

On vintage FX with loose or none filtering the effect of the diode ic clearly audible, sometimes more muddy, sometimes a stiffer tone. Very few 'til zero difference in tone if the bias-divider is well filtered or the bias is generated via IC. If the FX is powered by battery the effect is more audibl...
