They are zeners, 5.6V zeners, with a forward voltage drop around 735mV.

This is what I noticed, there is no resistor between the output of the opamp and the clipping diodes(LED). I put 1k resistor then the problem disappears. I realised there's something wrong here, sorry about that. You probably guessed it but "A"/Gain pot lug is connected to pin 5 of the opamp. It seems obvious but it doesn't show on the schem.
