Re: flamed wood??
Hints on how to distinguish photo-flame from a thin veneer of real wood: - Photo-flame, when closely examined, has clearly been printed . It will exhibit the same kinds of ink halftone patterns you would see in the pages of a magazine. They don't print those things with particularly good printers. I...

Re: flamed wood??
I saw a violin a couple years ago with a faux flamed maple back. (It was just a cheap instrument with a formed plywood body, much the same way that most electric arch-top guitars are built.) The builder used a stencil to simulate the "flames" and held it a small distance from the instrumen...

Re: flamed wood??
Yep. Figured wood is expensive due to scarcity and desirability (supply and demand). What's going on in the wood to make it do that, though? In flamed and quilted maple, the structure of the wood is not growing straight. It is wiggling around. There are a variety of hypotheses as to why it grows thi...

Re: Photo-blog for my home-brew amps
Sound samples are up! They might not tell you much about how these amps will sound in a rock context, though, because they are all samples of Bach. No re-amping used here. Just playing the same thing over and over and probably annoying the crap out of my neighbors. If there are specific requests fo...

Re: Photo-blog for my home-brew amps
Posted a final "family" photo and wrote up a quick appraisal of all three amps.
Does the forum let us post mp3 files as attachments? I might make some sound samples if it works. I need to rehearse first, though.

Re: Photo-blog for my home-brew amps
Okay. So, I finished the amps in early July and I have been playing them for a few months now, but I never finished posting photos. I got 11 more photos up tonight. I will try to remember to take some photos of the finished stack tomorrow and finish the saga. http://dandyguitar.tumblr.com/ as usual....

Re: Photo-blog for my home-brew amps
Got some photos of the second amp up. The second amp is mostly AC30 inspired with a touch of Matchless inspiration thrown in for good measure. As with the first amp, there's a brief summary of its features and operation that you can read in the Tumblr post. I hope to finish the third one over the ne...

Re: Photo-blog for my home-brew amps
its a high gainer ? The "gold" amp can get pretty dirty, but it's not a "high gain" amp in the traditional sense of having a ton of gain stages. The circuit topology is: 2 parallel gain stages (one "normal", one "bright") > normal and bright gain controls > 2...

Photo-blog for my home-brew amps
I'm building three new 20w 6v6 amps right now (with Marshall, Fender, and Vox style pre-amps and power amp voicing) and I have been taking photos and posting commentary along the way. The Marshall is already up and running and I'm making progress on the other two. You can see it all here, if anybody...

Re: BBE 427 Distortion [schematic]
Unless my eyes deceive me, the capacitor you added to the tone control in my drawing does not exist on the board. It is not visible from the top side of the board, nor is there a spot for it when the board is considered from the back side. (No leads. Every component is already accounted for in my dr...

Re: Unfinished Guitar Neck for Strat?
If you want to learn more about wood finishing (why to do it, how they work, and how to do it), this is the best resource I've ever found. He goes into the chemistry of it without getting too technical for a layman to understand what he's talking about. A lot of libraries seem to have it, so check w...

BBE 427 Distortion TRACED [schematic]
Here's the schematic. Had some spare time tonight to sit down with AutoCAD and draw this sucker up. Could somebody move this thread to the Modern Effects forum? There are a few values that I couldn't make out in the photos (either due to focus or camera angle). Nashsnazzy, if you look them up on you...

Re: BBE 427 Distortion [schematic]
Got an initial trace of the circuit done. I think I've got the overall architecture figured out, but there were a lot of component values that I couldn't see due to camera angles. I'll have to get nashsnazzy to confirm/check some component values once I draw up a schematic. Rat inspired... just a gu...

Re: BBE 427 Distortion [schematic]
I'll probably tackle tracing it next week when I have some spare time, so a few more good photos of the top side of the board would be handy.

Re: BBE 427 Distortion [schematic]
Actually, they just say that the tone control is inspired from a '70s BMP, not the entire circuit. http://www.bbesound.com/products/stomp-boxes/427_FD-427P.aspx If you gave us a few more photos so we could see what's behind some of the bigger components, it probably wouldn't be hard to trace this th...

How much of an affect does C5 have on the tone? I understand what's going on electrically there, but what does it Sound like?

Re: MXR Classic 108 Fuzz [schematic]
Is the 47k feedback resistor really connected to the input side of that cap rather than the transistor side, or is that an error in the schematic?

Re: Dunlop - Eric Johnson Signature Fuzz Face EJF1 [traced]
beedotman: Won't that 47µF filter cap AC-short-circuit the power supply, effectively removing any chance you have of developing some dying-battery-ESR mojo? If I'm not mistaken, it'll make the battery sound like it's always super fresh, even when the voltage starts to drop. Low-battery ESR might not...

Re: New DIYLC is soon to be finished! [link]
My 2 cents: I agree. Bring to front/Send to back would be divine, or at least a keyboard shortcut for Bring forward/Send back so you don't have to go into the menu to do it each time. I'm really impressed with the re-write, btw. It's so much better than version 1 was. So far, it has flawlessly recov...
