Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Thanks. I tried to get the soundcloud app, but I can't get it to download. I guess nothing works correctly these days. I will try again whenever I'm in better cell reception. That may be a few days. I live in a bad reception area. Thanks.

Re: Tone Bender Mk.II - Help Needed
Thank you. Finally a clear, straightforward answer. So, the two low hfe- low leakage transistors I have would be good for Q1 and Q2? Will I have to change anything else? I only ask that because I'm low on parts at the moment and I think I used the last 100k resistor I had in this circuit. Thanks.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
I'll have to get more transistors because I don't have any with hfe higher than about 70. I think the leakage may also be a problem. I think I'm close, but the fuzz just seems too light. It almost sounds like some dry signal is coming through with fuzz behind it. I would post a sound clip, but I hav...

Re: Tone Bender Mk.II - Help Needed
I improved the clean up by placing a 100 k resistor in parallel with the 47k resistor on Q2 collector. It still has plenty of fuzz, too. With my guitar volume set to about 8, I was able to achieve a nice "In My Time Of Dying " style tone while using my Zippo lighter for a slide (a techniqu...

Re: Tone Bender Mk.II - Help Needed
Here are the voltage readings from my clone. These were taken with the battery reading 8.92 volts and the attack control set to maximum. Q1: C-7.11, B-0.04, E- 0 Q2: C-0.08, B- 0.05, E- 0 Q3: C- 8.08, B- 0.07, E- 0.05. I hope this will be helpful in figuring out the problem. Oh, and I should mention...

Re: Tone Bender Mk.II - Help Needed
Okay. Here are my options for Q2 all three are AC128. one has a hfe of 45 with 117 uA leakage. One has hfe of 48 with 105 uA leakage. And the third one I have has a hfe of 53 with 149 uA leakage. These are not in the pedal, but in my parts box. I have higher leakage in Q1. It has 299 uA leakage (hfe...

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Well, in that case it looks like there's still some work to be done here. Perhaps I just simply need higher gain transistors for Q2 and Q3?

Re: Tone Bender Mk.II - Help Needed
I have a couple with lower leakage, but the hfe is also lower (in the 40s) .

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Question. Do any of you get an upper octave effect from your Mk.I clones on lower notes with the neck pickup at full volume with the Tone control on zero? Mine was doing that even with the 270k resistor on Q2 base. It's not really a bad thing, I think. It does, however make this a quite unpredictabl...

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
I think I have it now. I ended up going back to a 180 k resistor on Q2 base and it increased not only the amount of fuzz, but also the sustain and the range on the attack control. I just recorded it on my old reel to reel and it sounds great. Thanks.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Honestly, I didn't notice any difference in the Tone. It sounds the same as it did before. It seems that a small fraction of a volt on Q3 makes no difference.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
I think I have mine biased a little better now. I swapped out that 8k2 resistor on Q3 base for a more modern type and the voltage on the base is now 0.02 volts. The collector is reading just over 8 volts. Does this sound right?

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Wow! Mine isn't that gated. It's a heavy sounding fuzz, but it's not gating like yours is. That's a really cool demo you posted. Thanks.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Okay. I tried this pedal through one of my Mother's little practice amps (a little Crate amp) and it did sound a bit more raspy, but pushing it into feedback was the only way I could really get a good amount of sustain. I listened to some Yardbirds and it seems Jeff Beck wasn't getting that much sus...

Re: Tone Bender Mk.II - Help Needed
I just can't help thinking that this pedal should clean up more when backing off the guitar's volume control. Is it supposed to? As it is right now, it doesn't. It does get more treble, but also more gated. Thanks.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
I would love to try this (and all of my other fuzz pedals) through a tube amp. All I have are solid state, the old Kasino being my "go-to" amp. That one started making odd noises (it does sometimes) . I gave it a couple good raps on the back panel and it straightened up. Anyway, when I can...

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
I can't find a single 1 meg resistor. I'll have to find some more parts somewhere. Oh, I was wrong about this pedal having less sustain than my Ge Fuzzrite. Hadn't used that one in a few days. But it's the opposite. I guess this is another one that will need a bit of tweaking.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Okay. I've just read this whole thread. It appears my voltages are as they should be. I've probably got it right and just don't know it. Anyway, lots of useful tips on this thread. Maybe the only thing left to do to my clone is increase that 270k resistor up to 470 k just to get a bit more of that b...

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Even with the base resistor on Q1 disconnected, the emitter voltage wouldn't even go above 2 volts. So, it looks like I will be ordering a matched transistor set for this one. I'll have to do the same for my Zonk Machine build, as well. Thanks.

Re: Sola Sound - Tone Bender Mark I (1965)
Okay. All I could find was a 1.5 meg resistor. I tried putting it on Q1 like in your schematic, but it won't work in mine. It just made it gate in a really weird way. Even with the attack control maxed out. I think this is the best I'm gonna get from this circuit. Maybe it's just me. I always seem t...
