Re: Voltage/Resistor/Q1/Fuzz Face

It will take some time before I'll be able to get into this a bit more, but i did manage to listen to the "470k/Q1" circuit a little bit yesterday. With a 470k resistor on Q1's collector the circuit produces much less fuzz compared to 33k-47k, and doesn't sound very good at all. I did not ...

Re: Voltage/Resistor/Q1/Fuzz Face

As I understand absolutely NO theory electronics regarding electronics I can't say that I understand your reply  In the end I will of course go with what I like the best sound wise, but I DO like to understand things!!! A circuit will of course sound behave different if Q1 sits at 1.2v compare...

Re: Voltage/Resistor/Q1/Fuzz Face

Just for fun I decided to see which value transistor that was needed to get the voltage down to about 1.2v on Q1's collector and it turned out to be 470k! With about (I've got a trimmer on Q2) 6.8k on Q2's collector I land on 4.5v. Haven't been able to listen to this yet (the family doesn't like my ...

Re: Voltage/Resistor/Q1/Fuzz Face

I've got an Atlas Peak so that I can check the transistors and they are ok and oriented correctly.

I've tried several low gain (below 100) transistors in Q1 and it seems like "the lower the hfe the higher the voltage".
With a BC109c/33k resistor the voltage is 1.2v.

Re: Voltage/Resistor/Q1/Fuzz Face

Messin' around with a FF circuit on my breadboard right now. In Q1 I really dig a 2N3440 with a hfe at about 50-60, but the thing is that with a 33k resistor on the collector it sits at about 2v or higher. With a 47k it lands on about 1.8v and with 100k it reads about 1.5v I've got a trimpot on Q2'...

Re: 2G303 Germanium transistors

Tried them in a Fuzz Face today, and they are nice quality trannies for sure. Not that interested in MkIII-IV, but a Buzzaround might be nice :-)

Re: 2N929

hfe-wise is very similar to 2N2369A -which is one of the best options for a smooth, low gain fuzz face-. And probably less noisy because of its lower fT (30 Mhz). My 2N929 measure from 130 - 250 while a 2N2369A won't go any higher than 120. I've got plenty of 2N2369's (measuring from about 60 - 100...

Re: 2N929

Hi, I've been using them in "Q2" in FF/Mk1.5 type of circuits, and there's just "something" about them that I like a lot. (The HFe measures 130 - 250 in the stash I've got) When I bought them 2 years ago I payed about 3.70usd for 20 of them! Spec wise the TI474 seems to be identi...

Re: 2N929

If someone would be so nice and explain WHAT - in a datasheet like these - is of importance sonically when using a transistor in a Fuzz, it would be much appreciated! (I DO understand the importance of HFe) Regarding the 2N929: http://alltransistors.com/transistor.php?transistor=6434 what I like abo...

2N929

Hi, I've got some silicon/npn/metal can 2N929 transistors that I bought 2 years ago, and that I really like the sound of. I'd like to buy some more of them, but my supplier has ran out of them... There's no company name printed on the transistor, but apart from "2N929" it also says "M...

Re: Leakage (Germanium transistor)

Thanks a lot :thumbsup Planning some "Fuzzin'" over Christmas and I'll most definitely will give all this a try 8) Edit: Regarding R2 on the Silicon Mk1 schematic: Is 4M7 really needed there? I always thought that 2M2 was big enough for a job like this.(Will try two of these in series as I...

Re: Leakage (Germanium transistor)

I have been thinking of building a Mk 1 using some Silicon Transistors, the original Mk 1 circuit was originally designed to exploit the leakage that Germanium Transistors have, it's used as the biasing system for two of the Germanium transistors (the ones which have a single resistor connected to ...

Re: Leakage (Germanium transistor)

Thanks.

I've read this one, as well as trying out the "piggy backing thing already.

Yes one can reduce hfe this way, but I've got plenty of low/medium gain SI trannies that corresponds to the hfe of the germanium ones, and I don't find that this method simulates leakage.

Re: Leakage (Germanium transistor)

Thanks! You're always very helpful :D Have you tried building a SI Tone Bender Mk1 yourself? The circuit is dependent on leakage in order to work, and it seems really difficult to get it to bias using SI trannies... As I wrote in my earlier post I know that it's been done ( http://stompboxes.co.uk/f...

Leakage (Germanium transistor)

As germanium transistors are getting more and more difficult to obtain, I know that I in a near future will try to emulate the sound/behaviour of Germanuim Fuzzes using silicon trannies (Impossible, I know - a silicon transistor will never be a germanuim one - but one must try ;-) I've found this ex...

2G303 Germanium transistors

I've got some old germanium trannies that I want to use in some fuzzes in the future. Most of them are well known: OC71, OC72, OC74, OC75 and AC128 but I've also got some 2G303 (620) with a nice Hfe/Leakage range: Hfe/Leakage 88 / 0.04 69 / 0.00 65 / 0.00 54 / 0.00 53 / 0.00 49 / 0.00 Has anyone use...
