Re: Clown Centurion (reworked Klon) [documentation]

Thanks dylan159 - very interesting analysis. I'm a big Klon(e) fan, and have built several clones and even designed my own version (using a Cornish buffer and a +/- 9V split supply). In fact, I have two on my pedal board! From your frequency plots of the CC, the response looks to be a little brighte...

Re: Tone City - King of Blues (gutshots)

I had one of these and yes it's a Bluesbreaker circuit on the left and a Klon(e) on the right. Sound was OK but I thought the BB side was a little harsh and didn't match well with the Klon(e) side. Combining a Klon(e) with another overdrive circuit is a good concept, but I would have chosen a milder...

Re: Amazonbasics - Overdrive

I suppose Ibanez, Boss, etc. could do the same thing (develop a line of ultra cheap pedals), They did. Remember the Ibanez Soundtanks ? With modern production techniques, and the high production volumes required for it, producing simple electronic gizmos such as stompboxes is cheap. The thing is, c...

Re: Amazonbasics - Overdrive

To me, it makes perfect sense that with sufficiently cheap OEM parts and modern SMD production methods, overseas production facilities can make an inexpensive pedal that sounds "close enough" to the higher cost versions. I suppose Ibanez, Boss, etc. could do the same thing (develop a line ...

Re: Amazonbasics - Overdrive

I guess Amazon is following in the footsteps of Sears in the 1960s, who sold lots of Kay and Harmony guitars to the masses.

Re: BAJA Highway 1 [documentation]

Yes, I chose red LEDs but you can experiment and decide what you like. I'll see if I can locate my build, but my recollection was that it was not as "buzzy" as the original DS-1 but more of a mid-range distortion.

Here you go! It's been a while since I looked at this one but it's a nice distortion box. Let me know if you spot any problems with the layout.

Re: Vox Scorpion V116 schematics

Interesting amp. Basically comprised of leftover parts from other Thomas-Vox amps. See here: http://www.voxshowroom.com/us/amp/scorp.html I have a Vox Buckingham amp (head and cab) that I've been refurbishing, and it's been a labor of love. Fortunately, I have a schematic and have been able to sourc...

Re: BAJA Splawn Quick Rod style Overdrive 160220 [documentation]

Thanks again Bajaman, this looks great! In particular, I'm impressed with the "built-in" BOSS-style soft switching circuit. I've always wanted to try this out and was thinking to implement it on a separate veroboard as a generic unit. I would assume that one could then use this switching o...

Re: Pete Cornish - SS-3 Soft Sustain [traced]

I built an SS-2 from the original veroboard layout at Tagboard Effects. What I discovered is that it sounded much better with the Cornish buffer at the input. Looks like the SS-3 has that incorporated into its design, so I'm sure it will sound better than the bufferless SS-2. BTW - I used my SS-2 ex...

Re: Fenderizer Pedal

Can anybody tell me, why is there a 27k resistor on the output? Can't find any need of that much of impedance. I'd also add an input buffer made out of the half of 3rd opamp... I agree - you can drop the 27K resistor at the output. The input probably doesn't need a buffer but if you have an extra o...

Re: Fenderizer Pedal

I like it. You could build this with a charge pump to get +/- 9V for a little extra headroom. Also, nice to see the tone shaping downstream of the volume control. Someone could design a vero layout though I could also build this on my breadboard to check it out for myself. Thanks for posting.

Re: Cheap OD pedal to Fuzz ?

I should note that my reference to R11 was based on this OCD schematic: http://zadvitsky.com/index.php/projects/pedals/ocd-overdrive-diy.html Also, 3.9K is just a starting point - you could socket the resistor and try different values. If you're modding your pedal by desoldering the existing parts a...

Re: Cheap OD pedal to Fuzz ?

http://zadvitsky.com/index.php/projects/pedals/ocd-overdrive-diy.html goes through the ocd circuit. component numbering is probably different I'm still learning the actual electronics behind it all, but as somebody who learns from tweaking things i would try: changing the clipping mosfets/diodes to...

Re: Please explain to me this op amp gain stage

I think that basically you will have the resistance from the pot wiper to output lug in parallel with R2-C3. As you turn down the op amp gain (and increase the wiper to output resistance), the signal will retain more treble (corner frequency depends on R2-C3). At least that's how I see it. Depends ...

Re: Analogman - King of Tone [traced]

Thanks - I'll start a new topic. By the way, I have a correction to make. I rechecked the markings on my BA100 diode and it is actually a BA110! I just received some BA100s from a supplier and they have a slightly lower forward voltage (about 0.67 V) which is nominally above the 1N914/1N4148 but are...

I wasn't going to upload a bunch of spreadsheets in this thread (there's already lots of great info from Manfred and others), but I do plan to collect and measure diode characterstics just as a general ongoing personal project. I'll need to go through my diode collection and I'll probably even cons...

Yes that would be great! However, I suppose this would be better suited to be stickied in the circuit design section or another more appropriate section rather than this thread. It should of course be referenced here, especially ideal replacement types for the ma856 I wasn't going to upload a bunch...
