Re: Buffer theory/Knowledge show-off/Why IS that?
To elaborate on the strange title: So why are there SO MANY different layouts and topologies used in stompboxes? Technology has changed over the years. People in the 70's and 80's had different options than we do now, and some kept on applying what was appropriate then . BJT buffers have limitation...

More like decoupling rather then filtering.

Re: Amp factory videos
Nah, I seem to remember a more general tour/interview, though it was of the same shack for sure. Or maybe I just imagined it.
Anyway, they seem pretty candid about their knowledge and means, so I guess it wouldn't be fair to make fun of them.

Not strictly amp builders, but I got a kick out of all the in-house testing. I was going to suggest watching the Death By Audio tour for a laugh, but it's no longer on the YouTubes.

Re: EHX Crying Tone [schematic]
Moving tab or bouncing light or capacitative or Hall effect sensor or even piezo or strain-gauge-based, or an accelerometer in the treadle. Hell, if you're feeling particularly fancy you can use a high-precision laser, radio or ultrasound rangefinder. Also, a two-axis pedal would be easier to implem...

Re: EHX Crying Tone [schematic]
Or just use one of the other dozen methods of sensing rotation/displacement of a rocker pedal (or foot, for that matter) that doesn't depend on the fragile mechanical link to a pot.

Re: EHX Crying Tone [schematic]
I guess the sensor based on LED and its approximation to a surface The LEDS are on the wrong side. They're for lighting up the logo on top . While the accelerometer design could be implemented entirely in the analog domain, I think it's easier (at least the calibration bit) with a uC, which might b...

Re: So... tone capacitors, truth or myth?
Sure, the measurement is easy enough. But are the results significant? Are there any tests in the 9V/mA or 2V/uA (in the case of tone caps) range? I've seen this one mentioned a bunch of times, but how relevant is it?marshmellow wrote:The resulting distortion due to different capacitor types is easily measurable.

Re: overdrive vs. fuzz
Unfortunately the answer is not at all "technical", not from an electronics standpoint. The question has been asked and answered many times so I'll give you the gist of it: the difference is subjective but we can identify some general patterns relating to the amount of saturation and susta...

@artifus: Oh, I see now. More on this later. @telecaster: You have missed my point completely . In my foray into the minds and culture of modern musicians I have identified the source of our woes, of the confusion and woo-woo that leads to bickering such as we find in this unreasonably long thread (...

I for one don't understand your point. Yes, how about that? Are you trying to remind us that we are slaves to our own perception, that there is nothing outside the subjective? 'Cause that's just fine, but just say so. I'm sorry, I've been watching a debate with Deepak Chopra and I'm particularly sen...

Re: The 'Sound' of Capacitors..
I don't know what you just said One does risk becoming cryptic when trying to be thorough yet concise. So let me offer an example: We use a large electrolytic coupling cap with some huge equivalent series inductance such that its impedance "inverts" within the audio band, say at 5 KHz. Th...

No, it's reverse-biased during normal operation.
