I've recently noticed that Tim's great site at is coming up as a virus, trojan horse, or other bad things in my browser. So I thought I'd grab all the circuit images and zip them up for safe keeping. I have emailed him in the recent past, but there has been no reply. :hmmm:

For a long time I've felt guilty that my pedal board didn't include a compressor. Finally, after about a year of breadboarding, I have produced a circuit that can take on a Dynacomp and win , boasting:

Up to five times more headroom than a Dynacomp
Less noise than a Dynacomp
Same available sustain as a Dynacomp
Fewer parts than a Dynacomp
Cheaper than a Dynacomp
Feedforward side chain
Possibility for all five controls
Fits in 1590B
Millennium bypass

Hi everyone,

I have the great honor of being entrusted with a Schumann PLL for repair. I've also taken the time to trace it. Despite the goop, and rats nest wiring which prevented me from using my camera to trace, I present my hand drawn papers of this piece of vaporware.

Keep in mind that the board drawings are of the trace side, so the IC pin numbers have to be mirrored.

I didn't mention on the board 1 page that the 240R, 120R, 110R, the cut 10K, 1M, 200K, and 150K are metal film....

Has anybody played around with the Shure Level Loc Compressor circuit before? I has popped up on a few pro audio forums ( here & here ) and I was surprised to see that it runs on a 9V single supply.

I cut out just the compressor part from irfrench's 500-series version & built it up on the breadboard. Holy squish!!! This thing is like a tone trampoline. It clamps down HARD on the signal & has a much less transparent crunch to it than other FET compressors like the Rothwell Love Squeeze or Jon...

I went on to try to find a matching pair of diodes for one of my built.
Long story short, I ended up measuring and testing a good part of all odd diodes I have had accumulated over the decades of tinkering.

Some are germanium, some are silicon, including Schottky, etc. I won’t talk about whether any of these sound “smoother”, “warmer”, “rounder”, “fuller”, etc. I don’t believe in tone wood either; nor that a measured 33nF cap will sound different than any other. Disclaimer being out of the...

As I am an avid cloner myself, I thought that it's my time to give something to the DIY community. Here is my trace of the JHS Bender. I was interested in the way that he got germanium sound from silicon transistors so I thought I would give tracing it a go. I measured all of the resistors in the circuit, and the values seemed to make sense so I didn't cut any traces. I did however, cut all the traces around the capacitors to measure them so I know they are correct.

This is NOT a beginner's project.
This was traced from a recent B K Butler pedal and has the bias pot modification which alters the voltage on the cathodes of the 12AX7 tube.
You will need a suitable 12vAC power pack for this pedal - the original has a small toroidal mains transformer fitted internally near the front of the case.

The Death by Audio Fuzz War is pretty cool and highly variable tone fuzz. Gets a nice scooped big muff all the way through Maestro fuzz tone and shin ei screaming fuzz type sounds. The tone varies but the fuzz is all out all the time.

I have a few pics of the top and bottom of the board as well as some shots with the board held up to a light so you can see the traces through the board.
I was going to trace this but I don't have the time right now.

I had wanted to make a compressor circuit for a long time, because it's a popular and somewhat easy to make effect, but the existing DIY offer left something to be desired. You should be ready to accept some compromise, in the form of: noisy and hard to find OTA chips; expensive and hard to find (in THT at least) VCA chips; hard to find (again in THT) and fiddly JFETs; circuits that underperform in some way or another, or; circuits that aren't well translated to instrument input and stompbox...

Hi all,
I own since ages this Dunlop CBM95 Mini Crybaby, which I love it as it is super compact and space friendly.

Lately I opened it to apply few mods (beside the 3DPT switch with bypass status LED which I already did years ago).
I didn't really trace the circuit, but from the components and values I saw, I think the schematic is the same one as the Crybaby CB95 with the input buffer and MPSA18 transistor.

ECC83/12AX7 real tube inside, high quality components make it much different with other overdrive pedals, transparent and warm sound with extremely low noise, try the tube drive if you're fans of Gilmour or Johnson. For sophisticated user, the board level bias trim could adjust the tube plate voltage to have different experience.
The wall warts power adapter is removeable, it's convinient to pack up the pedals.
Moreover, it could be the smallest real tube drive...
