Do different capacitors types really sound different at the frequencies seen in guitar pedals, amps, speakers ?
What do you think ?
If you do think there's a difference, what type do you prefer ?
Some interesting and questionable claims in this article:
I especially like this: If you want to use the vintage caps, make sure that you use vintage cloth wire inside your guitar and the Gibson fifties vintage wiring, otherwise you will not fully experience the tones from these caps.
So you...

Electrolytic output filter cap, what is it good for??
Greetings ppl :)
As a nick probably tells something about a poster, mine means that I know my way around tubes, but all this SSS (solid state stuff) is pretty foreign to me.
After I learned some basic SSS in order to do simple switching in an amp, I figured its time to start playing with pedals.
The two projects I want to start with, in order to get my legs (feet?) wet, will be cloning my Lovepedals E and COT50.
I read already about the...
So im studying tonestack meathods and Im trying to get my head around resistor/cap combinations for frequency response control on an effect.
In an effort to break this down in simpler forms to help me understand, I reckon a frequency response capacitor chart would help me alot.
Here is an example to make my point.....Im familiar with placing a very small value cap (10-15Pf) in a feedback loop on an opamp to cure ossilation(the cap filters out high end info). So is there a chart that could tell...
I have an MXR M109 6 band eq pedal that appears to be microphonic. After poking around with a chopstick, it appeared that C2, C3, and C4 were all making noise. I traced the board out and, other than the addition of a switch and extra filtering, it is the same basic design as the old M109 schematics you can find online (just with different callout names). So I replaced these 3 caps, but the problem persists.
I also reflowed all the jack, switch, and power supply contacts in case it was a broken...
I'm new around here and I'm not certain I fully understand the post filing system you guys work within.
I'm a civil engineer, and we typically adhere to the Magic Smoke theory of electronics, so my background is very limited. Two classes in college, almost two decades ago. I'm just getting into this stuff by building some projects from tonepad.com. Successfully completed the rebote 2.5 delay, so I'd like to move next to the filter/sample/hold (Maestro FSH1) build, and I'm struggling with the...
Im actually new in building guitar effects. And some circuits required the 1uf film capacitor and I only have the non polar 1uf in hand. Can I use the non polar as a replacement with the required film caps? Will it do the same job as the film?
I'm getting ready to attempt a trace of a Red Witch Pentavocal tremolo. Its all SMD components. The resistors have the numbers so I'm able to get their values from their codes - I also tested them and got readings close, if not on to their written specs, but the capacitors have no values written on them.
I've measured a few with my DMM on there capacitor reading function. Is it possible to get accurate or close enough readings/values of capacitors when they are in the circuit?
Just finished a Vorg Warp Sound (op-amp based eq. pedal) build and it made me think of this...
The Vorg has two 10k resistors forming as voltage divider between +9V and ground to provide a reference voltage, and a 33uF electro for decoupling at the junction. I didn't have any 33uFs on hand, and so subbed with a 100uF.
This got me thinking - what design criteria do you consider when selecting decoupling caps in general? I'm guessing the sub of a 33 for 100uF will work fine, but most...
I just got hold of some ancient 2u2 capacitors which I was thinking of using in some fuzz face builds. I know mojo is bunk but sometimes it's fun to build with smd, and sometimes it's fun to build with stupidly big vintage components.

The text at the top says 'STC' which I assume means they're tants? Trouble is there doesn't seem to be any polarity marking on them. The ends do look different from each other however.
I have a few questions. Thank you in advance to anybody that answers them. Ok, the blue BC caps that Dunlop, DAM, etc uses.
1. If they are made by BC/Vishay where does Philips fall into the equation? You can find Philips written on them, but they appear to be a Vishay part...
2. Does anybody know the Mouser Part # for the 22uf and 2.2uf BC Caps that are commonly used by boutique builders? The pictures at Mouser are stock photos so I wanna make sure I order the right ones.
I bought some on...
I am still gathering the parts to assemble a Penfold fuzz... (
here the schematic:
It asks for some 100V axial caps, does it make sense on a fuzz feeded with a 9V battery?
Most important, a 4700μF 100V axial cap costs 6.45 euro here in Germany (about 8.7 $)!!!
Radial caps are cheaper (I have no idea why), but few are available at that voltage rating.
Has anyone already tried to use caps with lower voltage ratings?
I cant identify what caps those are, but Im planning my own version of a low gain fuzz face with different Ge transistors, and I already have some PiO output caps, what kind of input and feedback bypass caps does the bonamassa use? What would be a good suggestion or approximation apart from standard electrolytic?
hello, I'm modding a joyo vintage overdrive for more bass response and was wondering if I could use a foil type cap that I had in my parts bin or if I should stay with mylar ones. thanks IMG_0001_138.JPG
since I have been having hell finding a .056 cap I started looking for a possible sub and ran across this link and it has some good info regarding what you could substitute for your needed cap in terms of uf/mf, voltages, etc. enjoy :D
kinda curious with the various types ( electrolytic, disk, etc) which type of caps does everyone prefer? also why do you prefer it? does using a different type have a benefit over another? anyway, reason I ask is I performed a little surgery on an OLD computer monitor to see what parts I could obtain (still have to check resistors) anyway I found this white box looking thing in an area labeled c on board designating capacitor and both of them are .047uf ( actually I thought it was an odd little...
when reading the capacitor C11 which is a 2u2 capacitor and polarized (at least from the parts list), how do you know how to orient the + side if the schematic isn't marked? There are several capacitor symbols on the schematic, and some are values low enough that they do not belong to polarized caps. However, some are polarized but the schematic doesn't show which side to insert the + versus the negative.
I've recently got into designing and building all-smd versions of classic pedals - for the challenge, and because i am fed up with drilling pcbs! Once I've got some layouts I'm really happy with I'll post them in the 'ready to build' section.
I'm still using through-hole 47u electrolytics for power filtering though - two more holes to drill! Unacceptable. I know you can get smd electros but they're ungainly and expensive, so I was wondering ... can I use a 47uf smd ceramic for...
hello all!! I'm working on a project that calls for a few caps that I can't seem to find... I wanted to see if anybody could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for:
