I want to know if it makes sense to change the ready-made solutions in the form of VTL5C2 / VTL5C3 to photocell + LED.
The replacement looks cheaper and more affordable in the store, but I am confused that there are no photocell that fit within the technical specifications of the optocouplers.
However, I often saw photocell + LED from boutique manufacturers like EQD (Warden), Mad Professor (Forest Green), 3Leaf Audio (Proton / Wonderlove) etc.
At the same time, large manufacturers produce...

Who knows more about that topic or have experiences with?
Some Chinese sellers offer 1N34A Germanium diodes.
I wanted to buy a number of diodes but I was afraid of faked ones.

I'm questioning the value of using a zener as the polarity insurance diode in a pedal, as is done with any design I've seen that has the zener as the way to regulate the voltage to X volts (esp. with charge pumps). I see this with the cathode on the power input and the anode to ground. There is no current-limiting resistor to enable the zener to actually control the voltage - because (I'm guessing) you don't want the voltage drop when the input voltage is close to (or below) the zener voltage...

I bought some strange components from a military surplus store. found out they are variable capacitance diodes.. are there any guitar related applications for these?

They are hooked up anti-parallel like usual with DS together and gate the other side... These things don't really pass current G to S&D ( or backwards) do they?

What is a suitable alternative? I don't actually know what the diode does in this circuit, it is switchable but I have built it as seen here and it is not working. I used a 5818 (was all I had in Schottkey, but I guess it was a bad choice).

There are so many diodes out there, and used for different purposes - where can I read up on these and get a quick overview so I am not clueless?

I am new to electronics and want to dive in by modding my 535q crybaby.
Specifically I want to have led come on blue when engaged and red when boost turns on. I originally was going to have two led's to do this, but accidently ordered the blue red combo with three legs. Can this be done with my three leg led or should I go back and get two led's. Also I cant find any info how to do this part with the boost and was wondering if someone could help a newbie?

Hey I'm building a really simple volume pedal, I'm wondering if it is possible to use one POT to fade an LED aswell as adjust the volume of my guitar.

This is the circuit I'm considering adding the LED to.. although I'm testing without the switch at the moment.

I like using Germanium Diodes in certain circuits.The only one's I've used are the common 1N34a.I want to find a different Germanium that has a lot of the same characteristics as the 1N34a.Been looking at some datasheets,and the 1N270 looks like a good candidate.Is there any others I should check in to?

Forgive me for asking a simple question.(I've been knocking back a little bit of Grandpa's Cough Medicine.lol) Symmetrical Clipping is with 2 Diodes.Asymmetrical Clipping is with 3 Diodes.If you use more than 3 Diodes in the Clipping Section(i.e. 2 sets of Diodes in series.) Would that still be Asymmetrical Clipping?

I'm a little bit confused how to hook up the VTL5C10 or the LED/LDR combination.
The VTL5C10 has 4 legs and I can't really see where they might go on the vero?
Is that what the green lines are about?
If I were to make my own LED/LDR combination, how would that be hooked up?

However, I thought it would be great to have a Bi-colour LED so that I know when it's in feedback mode as opposed to just true bypass mode.
How do I go about wiring that up? :oops: , I've got the LED ready to go, and it works just on and off, but I can't get my brain into gear to get it to change colour via the SPDT?

how to get 200v 100mA or 1A rectifier bridge using 1n400x? help. this is for my solid state amp without using diode bridge. here is the schematic

Any of you guys use integrated resistor led's for your indicator led's? I found these at radio shack the other day and thought I'd give it a try. It works quite well and you don't have to add a resistor in line with the led. It'll accept up to 12 volts. Seems so simple, I wonder why I don't see them on more pedal builds.

I was looking for some 1N400x diodes to use for the reverse power protection portion of a circuit and I found some UF4002. I compared the data sheets and it appears that they are almost identical. The only significant differences I found were...

1N4001
standard recovery diode
reverse voltage 50V
reverse current IR 5mA

UF4002
Ultra fast recovery diode
reverse voltage 100V
reverse current IR 10mA

Will the UF4002 work as a substitute for the 1N4001?

I wanna experiment with different color LED's on a circuit I'm building on vero and I was wondering if I could use the led with a 2 pin socket I fashioned out of some big IC socket.

Will there be any issues with the connection?

I should say that I also want to socket it rather than solder it because I can't tell which end is the - or + on the layout :lol:
