Debugging 101 General rules and hints to succesfuly bring back that old pedal to life
I'm new here. decided to get into the whole pedal building thing but before my first pedal build I got told the Ruby amp was a simple one to get into soldering. After a few hours of soldering I finally got it all soldered and plugged in the battery only to get a loud horn type sound. The volume turns it up and down all be it the wrong way around (I have got the 1 and 3 around the wrong way)
Anyone know what could of gone wrong? As far as I can tell everything looks soldered...
Hi guys, still new to the forum and to the whole world of DIY pedals really. Go easy!
I've built a DAM Meathead clone from this vero layout -
I thought it looked easy, and as my last build was a Big Muff that is exactly what I wanted.
I got everything wired up and was very excited to try it out and.... nothing. I'm sure you have all been here before, you build a pedal that you are really keen on playing with and it doesn't work. Frustration isn't the word. So, there is no bypass signal or...
For a friend - it's a fuzz wah.
Wah crackles and scratches when you pump it.
Before taking it apart I want to have a game plan.
I'm thinking it's a dirty wah pot, possibly got oily gunk from the lubed pot turner (not sure what you call that). Air compressor and contact cleaning spray I'm thinking.
I'll check for loose wires to and from that wah pot.
I just thought someone may have tackled this one before and could offer me guidence before I crack her open.
I can't work out if this is a '74 Script reissue, an original '74 Script in a well looked after enclosure, or an original 'Script board transplanted into a new reissue enclosure. Weird for sure! A fella dropped it off for me to look at, as it's got an issue. Bypass and effect work fine, except the effect is super faint. The volume is fine, but the acutal phasing itself is weak as piss. The trimpot gives a faint variation. I've had the stomp, pot and trim out and measured/tested and put back in,...
Greetings,
Purchased an old ibanez ad80 a while back...sounds great...however, the blend pot goes from producing a mix that's completely dry when all the way to the left, to about 80% wet in slightest increase of the pot. Now, I have measured the resistance of the pot...and it does show that it is working in a linear fashion (although I am clueless as to what figures I should be seeing...hmm), so I'm ruling that out at the moment. What got my attention are the, correct me if I'm wrong here,...
I'm sorry for posting this here, as its not strictly got to do with pedal building or design, but rather repair. I'm also not looking for someone to do this for me completely, but just checking if anybody has had a similar problem and can offer some resolution.
I bought an EHX Black Finger, the tube compression pedal, the other day for dirt cheap. I say tube , as I've read that its a bit of a farce as there's lots and lots of solid-state gain-staging going on in there, but none the less, a...
I'm making a SHO, and I've successfully made a few of them with no problems. However, this ones being a bitch. When I turn it on there's a lot of hiss. It sounds like it has a huge amount of gain, but the hiss isn't related to the pot because it stays the same no matter if I turn the pot up or down.
Can anyone give me any ideas what could be causing this ? Like I said, I've made others that sounded fine.
hey everyone,
ill just start off by saying thanks to everyone who reads/helps out. absolutely love this forum.
the problem is this. i ordered smallbears OC75 mullard set for the MKII. when i test the HFE's of the trans i get something like 160 for each one. im not sure if its some problem with my multimeter or what. when i test some other PNP germaniums like AC128/122's i get a range like 78, 100... etc like you would expect. i dont know why the OC75s have generally the same HFE and why they...
HI! I recently modified my SD-1 to fulldrive mod. I love how the pedal sounded. Now the problem is my pedal is having switching problems. I traced the problem with the D1, which is the diode that switches the effect on. I was able to change the diode and will work perfectly for about a few minutes and then die again on me after 3 to 5 minutes of use. It seems that there could be over current running in the diode, but I don't know how to trace the problem. Tracing the circuit from slot 13 (from...
Just put together the Axis Face fuzz from fuzzcentral, and I'm having trouble adjusting the Q2 collector voltage to 4.5 VDC. It just sits just below 9 volts, adjusting the trim pot seems to do nothing. I've gone through all my connections and grounds and everything looks like it should. Obviously I've mucked something up, but for the life of me I keep missing it! Here are the voltages I'm reading on the two transistors with the trim pot set to 8.2K: Q1 E 0, B 0.67, C 1.47 / Q2 E 1.0, B 1.47, C...
I'm working up a circuit I put together and boxed it up and it was working great!! Then I took it out of the box to paint the box and when I put it back together I now can't max the gain without it going into severe oscillation??? Is this coincidental or could there be something I missed??
Got this Roland ad-50 built, but is not working, :?
I have checked that all the parts are correct, twice. I plug the guitar and I get the bypassed signal strong and clear. When I switch on the pedal the light is on.
I used an audio probe I made to test the circuit. Signal seems to flow from input to output, but the circuit emits just a bit of sound. No effect at all, just a bit of signal when the knobs are at max.
i just built an OCD pedal and for the life of me can not get rid of the stupid pop when switching on and off! ive tried putting bleeders on the last caps and nothing changed. took the led circuit out and nothing changed. the pop is controllable by the volume knob. so when the pedal is tuned down theres no pop and i found that if i ground it out at the last cap the signal goes away and no pop. but, cant get rid of it at all!! any thought?
I'm working on a boost design and it sound great until I turn my guitar volume pot down, even to zero and I 'm getting radio station signal..........is this an impedance issue maybe??
The pedal i am building is a microamp, sho, and ehx hog's foot.
i've got the SHO working without much trouble.
But the microamp and the Hog's foot both suffer the same problem. they have a quiet buzzy distortion, like a really bad square wave fuzz not even up to unity when the pots are on full.
tested the Hog's foot transistor and it seems like i finally got it the right way round because its making SOME noise now, also tested using the voltmeter at c+e and shorting b+c, b+e and all was fine....
Hi,
I tried to make a fuzzface on a perfboard, based on what I could find on those two websites :
I put sockets for most of the parts. I got no sound going through the beast.
I wonder if the layout I made has any mistakes. Does someone sees nonsense in it ? (I'll burn a candle for him / them)
I've just built this and can't get it to work. The troubleshooting gave me a headache so i could use some of your wisdom and a set of fresh eyes (or two :D)
The problem is that i have no sound at all when the pedal is engaged. I audio-probed this morning and found out that i got no sound all the way from the input resistor (R2). I'm not a tech guru by any means, but to my understanding this is most possibly caused by either:
1) The power diode (i use an 1N004). When it's either...
I built this circuit (the layout by WhiteKeyHole), but something strange is happening. The bypass works fine, but when I click on the pedal, I get a loud pop. After the pop, I can heard the pedal working and the knobs even work when turned, however the sound fades out over about 5 seconds, then there is no sound at all.
I have triple checked my work, and everything seems fine. I even ran a blade down the tracks to make sure there were no accidental connections.
I got everything put together today and all the wiring looks great under the hood and I followed the wiring diagram correctly.
After plugging in the pedal and attempting to play it, the bypassed signal was muted. No sound would come through the amplifier when the pedal was bypassed. After turning on the pedal the signal will run through at full volume. The volume potentiometer (500k) of the circuit works fine and will turn all the way up to 10....
I build a SHO clone for use as an on-board guitar booster.
I've built SHOs before, so I had a little idea of what was to be expected.
I hooked it all up, and when it's on, and turned down most of the way, it works,
it's loud and it sounds great.
When I try to turn up the boost, it crackles (which is normal), but then it cuts out.
I get SOME signal thru, but it's greatly reduced...almost like the transistor isn't kicking in.
I have very little if any boost range. It pretty much...
HELP troubleshooting modded BD2 Blues Driver?
OK. I was trying one more mod, & now I can't get the pedal to work. There is a little sound if drive & volume are maxed, below that, silence.
I changed C24 to 0.1uF (R34 has already been made 10k)
Changed R9 to 10k (from 6.8k)
I believe R9 is the feedback resistor on the IC op amp. (not R8, as some schems here have it..)
I have checked my joints, & re-done them. I've tried three caps @ C24, & now have original cap back in.
