Debugging 101 General rules and hints to succesfuly bring back that old pedal to life
I've had many of these Maestro MP phasers (the wedge pedals) but this one is the only one that had an audible thump at the top and bottom of the LFO sweep. The LFO voltage range and shape compared to another working pedal appears to be the same. What are the likely culprits for this? The circuit is just your typical non-LDR phaser. All parts are original.
There were a couple of obvious broken solder joints at the pots when I got the pedal, and once those were resoldered the pedal sounds...
A friend who runs a rehearsal studio just dropped off a couple of DS1 and a HM2. The newer DS1 is healthy but the 2 old pedals which needs ACA adaptors are acting up. I'm pretty sure these 2 were used with a variety of AC adaptors which i suspect is causing the problem. Also they are quite old and never had been looked into since they were bought 10-15 years ago. i get to keep the bad ones and need help fixing them.
DS1 works with battery and with regular adaptor daisy chained with other...
Hey there! I recently built a Colorsound Overdriver following the layout.
1. My problem is that the drive pot only really does anything at the very end of the taper, the sound is non-existant when the drive is low or down, clean in the middle and then all of a sudden is fuzzy. There's no overdrive in the middle, and the volume is very low until the very last portion of the taper. The pot is a 10k linear pot as suggested by the guy on tagboardeffects. I've heard that Colorsound Overdrivers are...
Not sure if I'm posting in the right forum, but here goes.
I recently purchased a second hand Roger Mayer Concorde treble booster with a faulty indicator LED. Pedal works fine otherwise. The owner told me that the problem could be a faulty transistor next to the LED in the circuit. Tried my local tech but he didn't have a similar replacement tranny (Uraltone in Helsinki, Finland). The original transistor has markings BC550 C 147 . Closest replacement i could find is BC 550 C...
Hello!
today i tried one Zvex box of rock -boost section- based booster with my friends active pickup guitar. He uses his amp's distortion and he needs a booster for a solo section .We used the effects loop for the booster .The problem is that we have a feedback problem even if we go to 2 meters away from the amp.I think to put a resistor from the input jack to the ground or to put in series a resistor to the input jack to reduce the power of the pickups.
Also until now i can't measure(and...
A have recently built a fuzz factory clone from the vero layout featured here:
all seems to be working (oscillations etc as well as some great useable tones) However the pedal is extremely quiet, needing almost full volume on my Marshall 30W amp to gain any useable volume. From what i know about Fuzz factory's this is very unusual? currently the volume pot is disconnected as when i connect it to the board, all oscillation is killed and all knobs lose functionality? could the quietness be...
Im looking into building my own snow white auto wah. could someone please verify from personal experience if these attached schematics are 100% accurate? They seem to be a little different from each other. also looking to verify if the vero board layout is correct too. i may want to do a pcb for this instead of veroboard. the pcb layout is attached
the problem im having is when i try to print the printout must not be to scale because not all the pins on the ICs line up. is there a special way...
I put together a bass booster using the Anderton Frequency Booster and a simple input buffer. I breadboarded it today and after a few minor adjustments it works like a champ. My problem is it's noisy as hell! When the circuit is disengaged it's perfectly quiet just going through the bypass switch, as it should be. But when engaged there's quite a bit of hiss and noise.
My question is, are breadboard circuits inherently noisy because they lack the metal case as insulation or is it because of...
Here's the deal, I designed a Tremolo, based on a PIC programmed mostly like ElectricDruid's Tap Tempo LFO and using a LM13700 VCA (Ray Wilson's Music From Outer Space VCA). I sync'ed an RGB led to the clock and apparently the led draws too much current and induces a ripple on the power lines. I thought this could be solved by using a larger capacitor, but even with 470uF it still affects, and on some settings (square wave), you can hear the 'click' when the LFO changes...
I've just built this. Anyone else had a go and like me, did you get no sound at all? Any ideas as to why? I've checked my build so many times and I can't see anything wrong.
Help!!!!
Hi !
I built the burst version based on madbean's layout . The pedal sounds great but I get a rather loud cycling noise (something like prprprpr in the likes of a diesel generator) when the fx is on . Its volume increases when i roll back to 0 the volume pot on the guitar and it's influenced accordingly by the pots (level , gain and glass)
I checked all the solders and remade them just in case... I also swapped all the electro caps and a couple of resistors ... and removed the 47pf in the...
Hi, me and friend built 3 menatone red snapper pedals 3 knob version, and all of them doesn't overdrive. The clean sound goes throuth the pedal, volume knob works well. Changed different IC's, but the result are the same. Wheres the problem? The diodes? The pedal built on a vero by this schematic
Here are some pictures of the pedal i've made:
Could someone help? what to do? why the pedal doesn't overdrive, it works just like a clean boost.
Recently build this octavia following the layout at Tonepad to the T . The pedal works, but picks up hum when my strat is on the neck, middle or bridge pickups. Postions 2 & 4 are nice and quite. What could be going on? Tried the sheilded cable on the Input with no results.
I've built a mastotron clone, and it's not working. When i turn it on, no sound at all.
I used this layout:
To try to debug this pedal I assembled an audio probe with a 100nf cap from wima and started from the input towards the output to find out where the sound stops in the audio path. I stopped getting signal trough at the first transistor in the chain. I'm not sure what can this be.
Could some give me some hints on how to solve this?
Hi. Just bought DOD Supra Distortion FX55B and accidentally connected it to a 18V power supply. So i don't really know if i've burnt it or was it delivered broken, but it doesn't work. The light turns on, but there's no sound except for a very quiet buzz when level/dist are set on max (when you pull the strings). Is it possible to determine what's broken, what equipment is required to do so? I can soldier, but am a total noob in fixing stompboxes. Any ideas what to do with it?
This is my first post on this forum so forgive me if it's not posted where it should. Also excuse my average english ( I'm french ).
I've just bought a 1979 18V Electric Mistress ( green letters ) and love it. The only problem being the volume drop issue ... and maybe the bypass.
I saw Blonde Graemey's mod on youtube to get rid of the volume drop, the 0.22mF capacitor and 10kOhms resistor. On the video, the capacitor looks like a polarized tantale one but it's not clear where...
So I am new to pedal building and as my second project I decided to build a DOD FX25 from
I got everything together and no sound. I ran an audio probe along it following the input and lose signal on the far side of R23. It sounds like the circuit is complete (ie no noise) but no guitar sound either. I swapped out the resistor and still no sound. Is it possible it is not the resistor but something else on that side of the circuit? IC2 maybe?

I hope someone can give me some pointers. My HM-2 pedal is acting up. The pedal is used with a 9V battery. When you switch it on, the led lights up and the pedal sounds as always. After 20-30 minutes the led starts to dim and eventually is no longer visible. As this happens the sound of the pedal also changes. When I unplug the pedal and wait for 20 minutes or so, the led is bright red again and the sound is also OK. Then, after 20-30 minutes, etc, etc.
Does anyone know what can cause this...
I built the Fat Furry Freak fuzz pedal from pedalparts.co.uk and now I'm getting clean guitar (bass) with everything turned down but as soon as I move the volume it starts clicking only when I play a note. i checked the soldering and any bridges and the resistor values are correct and the electrolytics are in the correct way. What could be causing this?
I'm using Mylar greenies as capacitors - would they cause it? Would my transistor cause it if they were fried?
I picked one of these up, non functioning, last weekend. Made by Guyatone in the 80's for their own line, Ampeg, Rozz and a couple others. Precious little info on the net about them, but I did find a very nice (and I think accurate, as far as it goes) trace of the board with components and a somewhat incomplete schematic.
I've been comparing the trace with the pedal and the schematic and have hit a discrepancy I hope someone can help me with. Basically, if the pedal is wired correctly (a...
I have an issue with my two Boss pedals (CE-5 and TU-3): after having switched off and then on my Harley Benton powerplant, no pedal was working anymore. I looked at the fuse under the female plug, it is not 'broken' or blown but it didn't work when I tried to light a flashlight with, so I think it is not working anymore. If it was only a matter of changing a fuse, that wouldn't be an issue, but when I tried to power up the pedals (Digitech Digiverb, MXR Distortion 3, TC Flashback and the...
Ok... So I've built the klon buffer (from beavis audio) and I love it! I really want to add a boost that is turned on and off via a foot switch. I'd also like to be able to control the amount of boost via pot. I want to be able to use the buffer (always on) and stomp the booster in and out without affecting the buffer. Please help due to my complete ignorance on how to accomplish this. An LED indicating whether the boost is on or off would be tremendous... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
