Debugging 101 General rules and hints to succesfuly bring back that old pedal to life
I was having issues with a parallel looper design and asked for advice a while back to help eliminate switch popping and circuit noise. The attached file shows a pop-free version; the switch popping finally disappeared after removing all pulldown resistors. The guitar signal was too quiet, though, and the circuit had a high noise floor. Although the schematic doesn't show it, I was using a voltage doubler.
The second file was a redesign using lower noise op amps and other changes. The...
I’ve been dinking around on a fuzz face on a breadboard for a few days now. I’ve got it pretty dialed as to how I want it at this point. One problem though no matter what I’ve done doesn’t seem to change. When I use my strat (stock 2020 players) if I turn the volume knob below about 8 I have no sound unless I have the fuzz turned all the way up (I initially was following the directions from small bear that says use a 1k anti log so this makes the turn it all the way up even worse I think, I...
I recently built a Cephid chorus from PedalPCB (CE-2 clone). Works great and all component values were tested before building to make sure everything was in spec. I compared it to a Danelectro Cool Cat 18v (cs-505 clone) and the cool cat had a bit more bass response which I tend to favor. Does anyone know what caps I should modify to get a bit more bass response out of a ce-2? I have attached a schem. Thanks!
I have recently found in my collection of pedals, one of them.
The problem is that when I step on the pedal to turn it on, the sound is faded. It sounds like the effect is only kicking in very little. If I keep my foot down on the pedal, the sound Is perfect. I believe something is wrong in the switching circuit. I've tried looking for a schematic but haven't had any luck. Any insight would be helpful.
I'm using a Voodoo Labs ISO 5 power supply...
I'm looking for for a solution to popping that's occurring with a 4PDT and SPDT in a circuit by potentially utilizing a microcontroller. I've read that they can be programmed to briefly mute the signal as they switch, which can eliminate popping. It's something I'd eventually love to learn how to program and implement myself but in the mean time, does anybody know of anyone with this knowledge/experience that could provide this service?
Hey all, I've been lurking around here for a while but thought I'd post with a question.
After attempting to install some new op-amps from the fromel mod kit for the Boss Ge-7, it's not working in a ... weird way. No bypass, no clean, just a loud buzz like something's connected to ground. The weird thing is whenever i depress the toggle all the way, the bypass signal comes through just fine. This isn't my first mod or even build, but I haven't really messed with buffered bypass before: does...
I want to make a tails switch for a DBD. There are multiple examples on the internet, but I just can not seem to get it to work correctly. Must be my lacking knowledge of transistors, so I am here to be taught :D
Attached a picture by R.G. Keen with a basic jFet switch as in boss/ibanez. If I am not mistaken when Vgs > V cuttoff the switch will be closed and if Vgs Closed
V control = ground (0V), Vref 4,5V makes Vgs 0-4,5 = -4,5V which is in the Vcuttoff range -> Open
I'd really appreciate some help with my build please, if possible. I have followed the troubleshooting steps in the FAQs but nothing seems to have had any effect. This is my first build with a PCB rather than a veroboard which I though would be more straightforward. That was certainly the kiss of death!
The kit is the Supreme Compressor from Effect Pedal Kits. It is based on the Valvewizard Engineer's Thumb, with 4 control knobs.
A lot of fuzz-like distortion is being produced...
This is my first pedal build and seemed to have hit a snag and not sure how to follow through or what to change from what I have. I'm following an old PDF from GEO Fex
I'm trying to do this Terminal Strip method and have gotten as far as the tuning process, inserting 100k and 10k pot to get a proper voltage reading from the collector and ground to set the transistor gain properly.
The PDF states a -6.8 to -7.2 voltage from the collector and ground is what is usually desired to get...
This is a weird thing I noticed, the Meatsmoke preamp has a buffer at the end of the circuit and a switch that allows attenuation of the output signal
Verellen Meatsmoke.png
While various Kingsley pedals for example doesnt seem to have one
Kingsley Harlot schemtic.jpg
On the Kingsley I dont see much of signal attenuation compared to the Meatsmoke, considering this is a high voltage tube pedal doesnt this make the output of the Kingsley too hot for most pedals after it?
Hi All,
I am very unexperienced in modding but, from time to time, I get the opportunity to help friends and get deeper knowledge of this topic.
A friend of mine needed a mod to solve the issue of volume peak with WH10 V3 . This is a well known issue and, even though several people explain that this pedal should not be used on the clean channel of the amp, my friend uses this pedal with different equipment therefore he could not rely on this solution. It is apparently rather common that people...
HI, I seem to have lost my login as it's been a few years, so I am new and shiny
I was searching the threads and found some info on how to make the reissue of the Ibanez WH10 sound more like the original (cap removal) and about true bypassing, BUT i can't find anywhere any good information on how to add a volume control to reign in the gain boost you get on these pedals. I know people do it but for some reason to my knowledge no one has ever posted how best to do it. So if anyone could advise...
Hi all, I have an issue with the line6 m13. All effects work but the lcds are either blank or black boxes. (LCD colour backgrounds still work) It seems a pretty common issue when looking online, but there doesn’t seem to be any solutions.
Has anyone had experience with this or any thoughts on what to try. Service manual is available online.
Thanks
Hi all, my line6 m13 has blank lcd screens. The colours still change and the effects all still work. But unfortunately the lcds are either blank or sometimes all black. Looking online it seems like a few people has this issue but I haven’t found a way to repair it yet.
Does anyone have any advice? Thanks
I was making a Guitarpcb Pump'd up Tonebender, v4. I am able to get fuzz, but it is sputtery and at a lower volume. Below are my voltages for the IC and transistors. I am worried that I blew two transistors (Q1 and 2). My father, who is a EE, walked me through the process to test the transistors with a volt meter, comparing the resistance of the B to each C and E. I am confused how the pedal can potentially have two blown transistors and still work, creating fuzz (yet bad fuzz). Do these...
I've been working on a parallel mixer with optional tails switch. I modified the switch wiring from Induction's tails mod from the All-Star Digital Reverb, and incorporated the circuit grounding of the sends/bypass from Slacker's looper.
This version is currently working, although after plugging in power there is an initial large pop sound when either the On/Off switch or Tails switch is engaged. After waiting about 20 or 30 seconds after clicking either of these switches the first time, the...
I need help with my CE-2 build. I bought the Cepheid Chorus board from Pedal PCB, so I am relatively sure that the problem is not a board problem. I am getting a signal coming through when I plug the pedal in, but there is no chorus sound. This is probably because of the R34 47K leak resistor seen at the very top of the schematic. There is no chorus sound, however. I have probed with an oscilloscope, so I know that there is a signal going into the MN3207 chip I am using, as well as...
I bought some 12v 1W diodes. I've repaired these in the past where this was the issue and is in the repair notes linked below as a common symptom of the no power issue.
I replace the diode and I get no power and the PCB at D-6 gets extremely hot. I had to remove part of the trace as it came up.
Anyone have any other thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? Below is the schematic and link to a BossArea thread:
Someone just gave me an RE-20 echo pedal to fix. Power LED comes on but the pedal is dead. Switching LEDs don't operate either. There's nothing obvious inside that looks to be a problem - no burning anywhere, no fluid residue. I going to check the crystal right now but I don't have any info at all on this pedal.
Does anyone have a schematic for this unit? I can't find one anywhere!
I wanted to leverage the expertise in this forum over a question about how to troubleshoot audio bleed noise. I have pedal that this is occurring and I've tried to troubleshoot it to no avail. But foremost, I'm actually quite interested in the root cause of this phenomenon.
The pedal where I have been observing this is a vintage EHX deluxe big muff EH3054C, the series/parallel version.
The scenario is the pedal has two outputs:
1) compressor out (which is always on)
2) Fuzz and compressor...
I found some NOS transistors in my parts box and realized that these were used in the input buffer of the ubiquitous Boss NS-2 noise gate. So I decided to cut and paste that part of the schematic to build a couple buffer-in-a-box pedals. But when testing them I realized that the signal seems weaker when the buffer is on compared to bypass mode. I confirmed my suspicions plugging into my soundcard and seeing about 5-10dB difference on average between active and bypass.
I have a Boss OD-1B on the bench. Passes signal in bypass but nothing when circuit is activated. I've traced sound up to pin 5 on the RC3403adb chip but I have no sound on pin 7. Is it safe to assume the chip is bad?
Could you help me out with my T-Rex squeezer? I got it as a defective extra to another purchase, so no idea about its history (wear on the screws indicate that it has been opened before!).
It has very low output. Only when cranking both gain and level to max do I get something close to the input signal level through. I think I checked some simple items (see below), but my electrical background is by no means sufficient to understand or follow the schematic... hopefully someone here...
