Debugging 101 General rules and hints to succesfuly bring back that old pedal to life
I just completed a Proco Rat on breadboard and upon testing it, it sounds fine until the gain knob is turned up about halfway. At half gain a high frequency oscillation is introduced that gets worse the higher the gain. I assembled it using the schematic from electrosmash.com and used all the same values for components besides the LM308 and the input resistors and input cap. I increased the two 1M resistors to 2M for better input impedance and changed the input cap to compensate for the...
I'm not getting a signal, even with no power (ie. bypassed).
I'm trying to add a starve knob, a tone control, and a pinch knob (look at the schematic for the Woolly Mammoth , I guess I'm trying to control between the gain stages . Is that the right term? Gain stages ?) to the Harmonic Percolator. However, with it all layed out on perf, nothings working. The signal stays at one corner near the 2N404A, but that's it.
when the effect is not on there is lot of noise...
once activated there is less noise, but still present noise...
it seems to be related to the volume pot, when rotating it the noise move from min to max.
Here a video better explaining thw issue.
What it could be ?
How can I check it ?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Here a video better explaining what the problem is :
Hi all.
I've tried to build a Keeley compressor 4-knobs version. I followed these schematics
However this compressor works bad. Is sounds distorted and cuts a lot the volume. I tried to change the IC (I though that was broken) but the sound still distorted.
I recorded an audio track to show you this problem .
I'm desperate, this is a birthday gift!
Hi,
I'm new here, so, if some of my questions seem stupid it's because this is new to me.
Recently picked up one these pedals, looks great, the wah is great the problem is that when you engage the fuzz on it's own the volume just drops.
Fuzz and wah engaged the volume jumps up. I assume the fuzz circuit must be playing up.........any ideas ?
Also is there any (simple  ) mods for the fuzz to make it a bit more friendly to bass ?
I've double, triple checked for solder/flux bridges between the traces. Still no sound when engaged, only my clean tone when bypassed. The 5mm LED on the board doesn't light up at all when turned on, but the PT2399 gets a bit hot to the touch. That's it. I have no IC voltage ratings since I don't really care about this pedal a lot, but if someone wants them I can go measure it.
Here's a link to the photo album. The voltage regulator in the pictures is NOT the one in there currently; it's now...
Heloo,
first post here, but i have been around for a while.
Recently i finished my first project (a JH fuzz face ) housed in a wooden box.
I build it straigt away without any testing and the result was really good with a problem of a little noise when the effect was active (a constant zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, is this what we call hum?).
Unlikely i do not have any equipment (multimeter etc) to carefully chech what's going on and my only debugging tool is a led to check the solder joints.
The circuit...
Well, I've just finished a TB, and I'm suffering a pair of troubles that are getting me crazy. It's a TB MKii, with a DPDT switch to change between MK1.5 and MKII modes. The wiring of the switch is verified, and I tested in other buildings succesfully. I followed the well-known schematic for the OC75 version, traced (I think) by Electric Warrior:
In this case, I mounted GT308b russian germanium transistors. Gains are specified below. Leakage zero, are usually happens with these old soviet...
Heyo, have been having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to wire a switch box for a friend of mine with two inputs (like 2 guitars) to a tuner out that is always on. it doesnt work passively so i guess i need some kind of buffer/splitter but one that takes 2 inputs and ends with one output. hopefully this makes some sense to people.
is this even possible?
the switch box has 2 inputs running to a 3pdt selector switch running to a mute switch running to an output. at the moment i just...
So I was having several issues with this for a while and I've finally gotten sound coming out when the effect is engaged! BUT... the sound is distorted. Sad day.
Before we start, here's the schematic and what not:
While probing around with my meter, I found that when measuring voltage on pin 5 of the IC, the distortion stops and, seemingly, the reverb works fine. It does seem to take a split second to charge or something before it clears up, and then when you take the meter off it takes...
Hello, the bazz fuss I built works great when on, but when bypassed there is no clean signal at all, so it only works when it's on. I have the spdt wired with lug 1 to output jack, lug 2 to board output, and lug 3 to input jack. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, works great when on, but when it's bypassed there's no clean signal going through, no signal or noise at all. Thanks so much!
Same problem with three different builds. SHOD, Hotcake and with BJFE Honey Bee.
All of them have the same very bad, unnatural and gating decay. With Sweet honey OD I tried a few different opamps with no help. Original pedals decay and fade the notes much smoother and the nature of the overdrive is also more sophisticated in the originals.
Anybody else had this problem? What should I try first?
hello I have a zoom G2 it is quite old now . recently whenever I use it with the same 1A power supply I have been using for many gears ,the power suply overheats and smells (it works fine with other pedals)
I opened the zoom and nothing seems like its burned but the regulator ,the 3.3 ohm resistor and the chips are really hot ! what could it be?
voltage regulator 29m33 3.3volts
diode 1n40 ...something...
in the picture is a simple schematic of the parts at the power input an the...
Hey everybody! :) Long time lurker, first time poster here. . . Thanks in advance for your help! The title says it all. I just built a Timmy from Nocentelli's attached layout for a mini Timmy, and whenever I turn the gain to minimum there is no sound at all, and with the gain at maximum there is hardly overdrive. The sound is also lacking the transparency that my real Timmy had, and sounds weak for the lack of a better word. I checked the wiring, solder joints, and voltage to the pins, and...
i am working on a butler bluetube pedal and cant seem to be able to get the eq section to work. pedal works but neither of the three knobs affect the tone any. Any suggestions as to what may be causing that?
I am currently working on a bluetube pedal for someone, the problem was that the eq section was not working but the pedal was functioning otherwise. I replaced a potentiometer and now there is a massive buzz and pedal on sends through a faint distorted signal when you hit the strings, the same when the pedal is off also. I have tested the pot and it's good, would like some input before I try more experimenting given it's not my pedal.
I've been using little 62mA axial fuses in some of my builds (better a blown fuse than a knackered power supply should it develop a short). They work well and the few ohms resistance they add helps filter power supply noise. However one has blown in a super fuzz and I can't see the reason. If I short the blown fuse the pedal powers up and works fine. I've been using a decent regulated 9V supply and battery.
The SF only draws a 2-4mA in normal operation, so the only thing I can think of...
When taking a closer look at the big muff schematics I noticed one thing. The third transistor driving tone control has actually a parallel dc path to ground trough 20k resistor - 100k tone pot - 22k resistor. Will that affect the transistor bias/operation somehow and will that be audible? Is that a mistake from engineer or is it just the way the engineer wanted? In some BM clones/variants the tone control network is dc isolated trough 1uf cap. Anyone using spice circuit modeller willing to...
Hello, first post here. I just built a green muff and it sounds awesome, but it has a little less oomf than my original. I opened up my original, and voltages all fall within the documented specs. On my build, however, the collector voltages are all a bit high. Here are the voltages on my build:
Q1
C 6.75
B .63
E .08
Q2
C 6.33
B .64
E .1
Q3:
C 5.98
B .63
E .09
Q4
C 6.86
B 1.08
E .53
Power supply is about 9.48V where it meets the board. I've checked and re-checked the layout ( ) but to no...
Hi I built this great pedal (schematic from GGG) and it sound really powerfull !
Anyway it sound too dark for my personal taste... even with tone pot regulated to max
Is there a easy way to get it more middle-high centered without loosing overall character ?
It is already soldered on borad... so not easy to experiment other solutions,
I really appreciate any suggestion !
Would any of you mind taking a second look at my BB Preamp layout? It's my first attempt at rolling my own. Only mods are diodes w/ switch and smoothing cap between pins 1 and 2.
i've had squeal(internal feedback) when i use 1M pot guitars like a jazzmaster with my rat. all 250ks are fine and when buffered it's fine...its worse when dist and filter are higher.
I assumed it was an impedance issue, so i wanted to raise impedance at first, but in fact lowering it was much better at sqeua reduction-and simulates my guitar having 250k pots in parallel resistance.
however, would i have been better changing the input +4.5v with a 1M resistor to a higher resistance? this...
