Debugging 101 General rules and hints to succesfuly bring back that old pedal to life
I've managed to diagnose the power problems, and replace a bad cap solder on C11. However. The problem now is that the P1 should controll the curve of the filter but it's acting like a Volume Pot.
Any ideas? Where should I go from here? I've checked grounds and voltage is going where it should. I've begun to triple check that I've got the build right. I double checked as I went.
I've been a lurker for awhile. Figured I'd read and try to build before I asked stupid questions. My first pedal was the darkside from madbean and I got it working but right now I'm getting very little volume and little change in the controls in general. For example, in order to reach unity volume with my clean sound, I have to turn the gain and volume all the way up. Also the tone is very bassy. :slap:
Any thoughts? Do you guys need pics? What exactly of?
Hey guys!Just finished building a Super hard on clone and I have a little problem. Actually I couldn't find a 5K rev log pot and I replaced it with a simple 5K log. The problem is that when engaged I get a boosted signal but the output won't change if I turn the gain knob. It sounds the same from zero to full clockwise. I have used the same schematic to build a pedal before, using an A4.7K (isn't it a 4.7K log?) pot and works fine. Is the problem due to the pot?My guess is no, because even if...
Hi everyone! Im new here, and asking help. Im building my first stompbox and im stuck with some general wiring issues. now i have everything the same as in picture, i guess i've confused some wires.... it works on the bypass, but if you turn it on there'is only some cracks. and volume pot works. Thank You, sorry for stupid questions!
I recently have tried to build a power supply for my pedal board that I am working on and have found an odd problem with my BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone pedal. When I used this universal power supply my pedal was noisy, and I believe I have tried it with a 9V battery and it was still noisy. Is it possible that I could have damaged the pedal? And if so, what would be the best way to handle this kind of problem? One thing that I plan to debug first is the power supply, possibly its not...
Hi guys just want to ask a couple of question. I created this custom pedal board for my All-In-One Rig the first level of the board contains a Boss GT-10 and a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah, the 2nd level of the board contains a Roland GR-20, a Boss FS6 and a Boss AC3.
The Fulltone Clude Deluxe and the Boss AC3 uses the same custom build Power Supply Unit. all of the devices are plugged into a power strip under the 2nd level of the board. now for the problem
I have a first generation Xotic AC Booster dead that has power according to the LED, however when I step on it to engage the OD, I get NO signal. I DO get a signal when the OD switch is disengaged.
I've opened the pedal up and didn't see any loose wires. I also blew air in it in case there was some dust and dirt that might be causing a problem.
Can anyone offer suggestions based upon these symptoms?
Hi,
I recently built an SFT clone according to the (stripboard) layout by Mike Livesly. After putting everything in the enclosure I toyed around a bit with it and also used a power supply to power it.
After some time it made *boom* and the 100uF electrolytic blew up (probably a bad electrolytic or some power spike, I don't know...)...I changed it and so far it works BUT I feel it has less gain than before and also the higher gain settings sound different. More synthlike fuzz than the one on the...
I decided to give my old rangemaster project another try. Bought as a kit years ago, assembled it, threw it in my fail box because I was too lazy at that time to debug it.
I know there's a number of things that could be wrong, but I tought it'd make sense to go over the obvious stuff, to make sure I didn't make some silly wiring mistake. I can't find the original wiring layout for it though, so I was hoping someone here could point me to a layout that would work for this schematic.
It's probably common knowledge that the cheaper high-gain distortion pedals have a tendency to self-oscillate. For instance, turning up the volume of a Boss MT-2 with no input and running it into another distortion pedal will create a grinding or rumbling sound, which is typically undesirable, but actually useful to some experimental musicians.
How does one encourage self-oscillation when designing a circuit? How do you avoid it if you are building a pedal with more musical applications in mind?
Hi guys, I just made my second pedal using materials from small bear electronics and a PCB board from GGG (it was a big muff pi). The switch was the basic Switch - Taiwan Blue 3PDT. The layout was GGG's.
Problem: The switch when engaged DOES turn off the effect, but as soon as I lift my foot, it will turn back on. The only way to keep the effect off is to keep the button pressed down.
Does this mean I got a bad switch or is it something else? Thanks.
Hey all,
Quick question.
I put together a mad bean Rangemaster with an OC 44 I bought from small bear. It calls for sprague atom electro caps. I didnt have any of these and it says that only the 47uF caps HAVE to be electro. So I used regular axial electro caps from my local electronics store (Norvac) Then I used orange drops for the other 2X 10nF and 1X 5nF. Ive built two of these and they both have weak distorted signals. I am wondering if the values are wrong for the three caps that I used...
Hi guys!!!! First of all congrats to everyone for contributing to an amazing forum for DIYers and musicians. Let's move on to my question. I have recently built and Easyface. The problem with is that I get a nice fuzzy sound but it is way too low volume...My ac128 transistor is about hfe81-90 accornding to the store i got it. Is it too low gain or is it something else? Here's the layout I used:
this is my first time posting on here. I have a question in regards to a problem I am having and wanted to know what you guys think. I have check (geofx) and couldn't find an answer. For some odd reason, I can play my pedal with no hum or any other problems, but have very little effect i.e. gain, tone, voice, etc. the pots do not seem to do much in the way of adjustment. It just sounds as if something is wrong and my build cannot be (opened) to increase gain and adjustment ability....
Hey all,
I just made a clone of the Clyde McCoy and incorporated the Foxrox buffer
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4235&hilit=foxrox
Everything works but for some reason, when I have the wah heel back (bass side) the notes sound like there is a slight octave and the higher strings are octave-like and flat sounding.
I bypassed the buffer and it still does it so it has to be something in the wah side of the circuit. I am using a Red Fasel inductor and had BC109Bs in there at 330 HFEs but switched them out...
Hey all,
Ive put together an Echo Base with the PCB you can buy on ebay. Ive got it working nicely except for the modulation. The LED doesnt flicker when the mod switch is on or off, there is no perceivable modulation in the on position, but when I manipulate the LFO Depth pot while the pedal is delaying I can hear a change in tone as if it were modulating. These things are supposed to have crazy modulation and Im not getting really anything. Ive done all the mods besides the diode lift mod, so...
Yeterday I finished my build of the sansamp gt2 (using tonepad version), however it did't work the first try (as usual), totally dead. I then started following the signal using an audio probe. First thing I noticed is that the output of the first opamp stage (either one of the selectable ones) was VERY weak, I heard the signal but very soft. Given that one of those first stages has at least gain = 1, I suspect that could be a problem. In fact, when I first breadboarded the circuit...
ive pulling my hair out wondering why my once working build doest work after resambling after painting hte enclosure...and after checking all my wiring/multimeter etc...ive isolated the problem down to the output jack.
it seems to be letting signal through only when the cable is inserted into the jack halfway (with the tip touching the jack parts) but when you click the plug into the jack fully where the indent of the plug sits in the nook in the jack...i get squat diddly doo.
Having searched for this many times, and not just all over this forum, I think I have an undocumented problem.
1) I am getting around 9v on all IC pins, dropping to 8.5 V on pins 2,3,6,7, using both a TL072CP and an LM1458.
2)When I use a power supply (standard boss thing, 9V, 200 ma), the pedal functions differently in a number of ways.
3) I am getting no sound in either bypassed or non bypassed settings, but a faint hum when using a power supply even though I am getting 9V on the...
hi there!!!
i'm realy new out here, and i'm wondering if any one can help me...
i want to build my own footswitch for my hiwatt g40 12r amp.it has 2 mono inputs for channel and reverb and i want to build a footswitch with 2 leds.can any one help me with a wiring diagram please??
ive finished wiring up my fuzz face (silicon NPN)
as per this diagram
i have a question RE the Pots...
is that link correct in using a 1K Audio/Log pot?
ive checked a few other sites (GGG etc) and it seems to indicate it needs a 1K Linear ?
i wired it up with a linear pot and it sounds fine until you dime the levels...then it goes all space ship noise on me (this could be because of the BC108s...i socket them so just slapped 2 random ones in quickly and/or that i was testing the pedal not...
I have just completed my first semi-successful non-kit build. I was using the strip board layout of this effect from the boutique effects section of this forum.
The build is mostly successful in that it fuzzes, oh man how it fuzzes! and the controls all seem to work. But for some reason when Stab is at the lowest position (ie. the voltage is not sagged) I get a traditional single coil like buzz with humbuckers, an unbareable buzz with single coils and as I begin to...
