Debugging 101 General rules and hints to succesfuly bring back that old pedal to life
Ok. I recently got a Diaz Texas Square Face. It worked fine. I opened it up, removed the foam piece covering the board and started gently hacking away at the goop. I don't think I hurt any components when scraping the goop. I wanted to install sockets for testing different transistors. I desoldered the NTE103's that were stock and installed the sockets, put the stock ones back in and now the pedal doesn't work.
I tested the transistors on my Atlas and they tested normal. I checked for any...
so, im building a kind of super tonebender MKII with a separate NPN silicon tonebender circuit and a PNP Ge negative ground MKII wired on a DPDT so you can switch between the two circuits inputs and outputs.
i have been having a hell of a time biasing the Ge PNP negative ground MkII so i decided to just make it a positive ground circuit.
now, the problem is that i dont know if its possible to wire a negative ground circuit and a positive ground circuit on the same DC jack.
should i change...
So, my problem is that i've built a SI MKII and a GE MKII in one box with one footswitch to turn it on. you select between the SI and GE sides by flipping a DPDT between the inputs and outputs of the two separate boards. i used dual pots
What i want to do is add a momentary DPDT footswitch as a feedback loop.
my problem is i dont know how the hell to wire it.
should i take the output and input wires from footswitch (meaning the ones that normally run to the circuit board but in this case to...
I etched a pcb and did the Madbean Poindexter. I have 1 nagging issue I cannot seen to figure out. When I engage the switch, the led lights up fine but no signal is passed. Ive combed over it and pretty sure there are no bridged solder joints. from the 9v input to r25 on the board I get a reading on the DMM like 9.4v. The next trace r25 goes to and so on has zero voltage the rest of the way through. also the 100 ohm resistor gets extremely hot. I swapped it out and no luck. It almost burns your...
Built this cicuit per original except for the 2SK30A in the place of the J201. The only problem was with gain control in the minimun the sound was gatey and squealing when I hit the cords. Read something about biasing and get back to the bord replacing tje 8k2 (which gave 1.1 at drain) by a 4k7 (which gave me 3.3). It fixed my first problem but I got another one: when I raise the gain pot up almost a quarter past minimum it starts to make a terrible noise that wasn‘t in the pedal even with...
Hey guys this is the second pedal I have ever built so thanks a lot for all and any help.
When I plug it in I get a bypassed signal but nothing when I engage the pedal.
Inside #1
Inside #2
This is the wiring diagram I used
And the layout
I was thinking that it might be because the output cap?(yellow) in the top right is being grounded by the lug that I soldered it to? :hmmm:
If any one needs more info about the wiring ect...I would gladly put it up......thanks...
I just finished building my germanium Fuzz Face but it isn't working. I have no sound in bypass and when turning all the knobs to max and engaging the pedal I have very low volume. I just this layout. Any know where to start debugging? Here are some pics:
Hello all,
I just buttoned up a build of the EA Trem as per Tonepads board and diagram. I ended up with good bypass, and, when engaged, the level control works as a clean boost. No tremolo effect is present. Running an audioprobe presented no trem throughout the audio path, HOWEVER, there is a slight and subtle trem effect near the end of note decay. I know this occurs naturally, but it varies with the rate of the speed pot. (?????!!!)
To the FSB policemen, I see that this has occured in the...
Hello everyone!
A couple of years ago, I visited a small shop back in my native Italy which primarily sells CDs, music-related clothes and gadgets, but they also had a few instruments and some NOS 70s and 80s effects, mics and other stuff.
Amongst them was a Guyatone Cross Over Box Auto Wah, which I decided to buy as I knew the Box series pedals are quite collectable, but as soon as I got home and plugged it in, I got some really bad news as it didn't work properly, but instead of asking for a...
On my Ibanez CS9, I am getting a strange sweeping noise...
The first thing I did was test the voltage of my VS One Spot...each of the leads run about 9.35v...The Ibanez DC adapter that I have runs right around 9.03v.
It is obviously something to do with that extra voltage--something the other pedals I have aren't as picky about. The CS9 used to work just fine with the One Spot voltage where it is at which is why it leads me to believe there is a component failure. What could have happened...
Hi all, This is my first official post in this excellent and incredibly useful forum.
Hoping some of you could lend your experience...
I just built an Op Amp Big Muff (with tone-bypass) using this layout.
After a few minor mistakes, I got it working! Its housed in a circa 2000 NYC box. I used the LED hole for my tone bypass switch, so no LED like the originals. I also utilized the power jack so I can use my pedal power or battery.
Overall the pedal sounds nice and like I think it should,...
Would the pedal not work at all if an electrolytic capacitor is installed backwards? I'm getting some inaccurate voltage readings on a recent build and since the layout is not confirmed, I'm thinking maybe C9 looks like it's backwards on the layout compared to the schematic.
Here's the schematic...
Notice how the negative side of C9 is what goes towards R15 (47k)? Well now look at the layout...
And see how on C9 the positive side is going towards R15 (47k)?
Hi! I am new to this site. Just getting back into building electronics. I just built a Klon clone. I bought the PCB from Build Your Own Tone-I believe he goes by the name Ming the merciless on sites. Anyway, After gathering all the parts and building the unit, I have a couple of troubleshooting issues. I followed the parts list and wiring on his site-which I believe is from the Sagittarian Charger. The only thing I did differently, is I used A 3pdt switch instead of the Carlinmg DPDT. He stated...
Hello my name is kristofer and this is my first post here and have tolerance with my spelling and gramatics since i`m from sweden.
I have this wierd problem with my wah that i recently bought.
Thw wah sound is very thin and when i use it with any kind of distrotion or overdrive absolutly nothing happens when i sweep and when bypassed i get some funky nosies and if i sweep it`s like it sucks the heights out of the tone.
And is there anyone in here that can see if it`s a reissue or a original...
I built a Klone (overdrive) a while back that worked and sounded fantastic. However, I'm not having issues with it. I'm using the full schematic. It has the charge pump, buffers, everything's in there.
When I hit the foot switch the pedal it doesn't come on right away, it sort of ramps up to full volume. This means there's some kind of capacitance going on but I'm not sure where. Possibly a short between one of the caps and ground?
Also the pedal was acting up, it would sound a bit low...
I'm new here. decided to get into the whole pedal building thing but before my first pedal build I got told the Ruby amp was a simple one to get into soldering. After a few hours of soldering I finally got it all soldered and plugged in the battery only to get a loud horn type sound. The volume turns it up and down all be it the wrong way around (I have got the 1 and 3 around the wrong way)
Anyone know what could of gone wrong? As far as I can tell everything looks soldered...
Hi guys, still new to the forum and to the whole world of DIY pedals really. Go easy!
I've built a DAM Meathead clone from this vero layout -
I thought it looked easy, and as my last build was a Big Muff that is exactly what I wanted.
I got everything wired up and was very excited to try it out and.... nothing. I'm sure you have all been here before, you build a pedal that you are really keen on playing with and it doesn't work. Frustration isn't the word. So, there is no bypass signal or...
For a friend - it's a fuzz wah.
Wah crackles and scratches when you pump it.
Before taking it apart I want to have a game plan.
I'm thinking it's a dirty wah pot, possibly got oily gunk from the lubed pot turner (not sure what you call that). Air compressor and contact cleaning spray I'm thinking.
I'll check for loose wires to and from that wah pot.
I just thought someone may have tackled this one before and could offer me guidence before I crack her open.
I can't work out if this is a '74 Script reissue, an original '74 Script in a well looked after enclosure, or an original 'Script board transplanted into a new reissue enclosure. Weird for sure! A fella dropped it off for me to look at, as it's got an issue. Bypass and effect work fine, except the effect is super faint. The volume is fine, but the acutal phasing itself is weak as piss. The trimpot gives a faint variation. I've had the stomp, pot and trim out and measured/tested and put back in,...
Greetings,
Purchased an old ibanez ad80 a while back...sounds great...however, the blend pot goes from producing a mix that's completely dry when all the way to the left, to about 80% wet in slightest increase of the pot. Now, I have measured the resistance of the pot...and it does show that it is working in a linear fashion (although I am clueless as to what figures I should be seeing...hmm), so I'm ruling that out at the moment. What got my attention are the, correct me if I'm wrong here,...
I'm sorry for posting this here, as its not strictly got to do with pedal building or design, but rather repair. I'm also not looking for someone to do this for me completely, but just checking if anybody has had a similar problem and can offer some resolution.
I bought an EHX Black Finger, the tube compression pedal, the other day for dirt cheap. I say tube , as I've read that its a bit of a farce as there's lots and lots of solid-state gain-staging going on in there, but none the less, a...
I'm making a SHO, and I've successfully made a few of them with no problems. However, this ones being a bitch. When I turn it on there's a lot of hiss. It sounds like it has a huge amount of gain, but the hiss isn't related to the pot because it stays the same no matter if I turn the pot up or down.
Can anyone give me any ideas what could be causing this ? Like I said, I've made others that sounded fine.
hey everyone,
ill just start off by saying thanks to everyone who reads/helps out. absolutely love this forum.
the problem is this. i ordered smallbears OC75 mullard set for the MKII. when i test the HFE's of the trans i get something like 160 for each one. im not sure if its some problem with my multimeter or what. when i test some other PNP germaniums like AC128/122's i get a range like 78, 100... etc like you would expect. i dont know why the OC75s have generally the same HFE and why they...
HI! I recently modified my SD-1 to fulldrive mod. I love how the pedal sounded. Now the problem is my pedal is having switching problems. I traced the problem with the D1, which is the diode that switches the effect on. I was able to change the diode and will work perfectly for about a few minutes and then die again on me after 3 to 5 minutes of use. It seems that there could be over current running in the diode, but I don't know how to trace the problem. Tracing the circuit from slot 13 (from...
