I just built an FZ-1 on turret board for a friend. It turned out GREAT! I used the original schematic with the corrected parts values that Modman has posted in Wiki article about the FZ-1. It's a very compact build too, I was able to fit it in a small 1290 box with no trouble. It's powered by two AAA.
I was really shocked how warm this circuit sounds. I was expecting mosquito tone, but it's not like that at all and it gets some very nice harmonic complexity on chords.
I used a mixed bag of different transistors and it seems to do it's thing well without any other change in component values. The trick seems to be to have fairly leak-y transistors for Q2 and Q3 to help it bias rightly.

Photos and build details to follow soon... just need to upload the stuff off my camera first.

Cool... so how does it sound compared to say a fuzz face or Vox Tonebender circuit?

It's sounds totally different than the Fuzz Face. It's brighter, but not in a shrill way - it's more clear sounding... no mush on chords at all, lots of definition. It's really a totally different animal and completely different color.

It's a rubber stamp kit I got from a craft store. The ink is solvent-based stamp ink.

Very cool! I like the stamps, too!

Can someone direct me to the CORRECT FZ-1 schematic? Thanks!!!

is there a proper way to bring the voltage down from a 9V so you don't have to use the AA's? diodes? resistors?

You could get a zener diode around 3-ish volts and use it with a resistor probably in the 1k to 3k range wired up in the usual simple voltage regulator way and that should probably work. Or, you could use a variable negative voltage regulator and set it to 3v. Or you could do the thing with a voltage divider potentiometer feeding an opamp buffer... that's supposed to be a pretty decent regulator.
But c'mon, two AA or AAA are so cheap and easy. You can get the battery holder from Rat Shack. I went with the AAA because they're cheaper than 9v and you don't have to "throw away" a bunch of energy to give it the right voltage.
Don't they make a 3v battery? I'm sure I've seen them in catalogs, and they were small-ish too.

LM317; you just need two resistors, and two capacitors.
But the Zener Diode should work well;
Also, you could get one of those pretty TO-92 7805 and then put a red LED after it, it should leave you with approx. 3 [V].

Thanks! This was my first ever homemade turret board. I got the supplies to do it from Hoffman Amps. I'm totally hooked on the turret board thing now! It's much easier than etching pc boards; all you have to do is drill the holes and stake the turrets in place. And since several components can share a common turret (like a ground turret or power turret), you don't need to drill nearly as many holes anyway.
I'm working on a Fuzz Face right now that uses a six lug turret terminal strip I knocked together.

i've been thinking of getting some of those turrets from hoffman for a while. i even made a couple of layouts already. about how many components can you fit on a turret? because, i made a layout for the dirty boots, and i think i need to put 4 or 5 comonents on one turret in a couple of places. are these turrets big enough?

I have been wondering how well turret would work out for fuzz pedals for a while now. I'm sold thanks for posting. I can't wait to see your Fuzz Face on Turret! :D

Here is the Fuzz Face I was talking about. Maybe next time I'll use more lugs so there's not as much "off board" stuff hanging.

The pcb on the left-hand side is the power circuit and an order-swapping switch - this is a dual unit with a Rangemaster... kinda like a Sun Lion... except, like, way better.
