Time to drop something in the DIY-ers pool again. Since there was quite some discussion on the SD9 in the last few weeks i decided to draw a board for the thing.

Those who have objections to board mounted pots, jacks and switches, stop reading and click the back-button of your browser.

so you're still here?

In the design the pots float above the other components. When you use the drilledit (page 7), print it out and stick it to the case with a few pieces of tape, you can punch the holes in the case straight away and mount the pots with solid core wire.

I'll post some photo's when my camera's battery's are recharged.

here's some stuff for now to chew on.

Some quick build instructions,

-Etch the PCB, drill it (most stuff is 0.8mm, other is 1 or 1.2, depending on the PCB padsizes. All wire bridges holed are drilled at 0.6mm. For the DCjack and the switches I use 0.8mm in case of the DC jack, drill 3 adjacent holes (for each pad) and then route away carefully (otherwise the drill breaks) the leftover PCB stuff between the holes. Same for the switch but
only 2 holes per pad there.

-Apply flux to the PCB prior to soldering, making life nice and easy

-Make the wire bridges with wire wrap wire.
- Place all components but the pots and LED
- Solder a small (5cm) wire to the switches ring and solder the other end at the "case ground " labelled pad. This ring comes at the inside of the case between swich case and case, therefore grounding the case.

-Solder solid core wire to the pots, length approx 4-5 centimeters as well.
-Drill the case with the drilledit layout. Use the lines on the jacks to determine position at the side. Spend some time to determine the height of these holes, depending on the jacks used, so the bottom lid can still be closed when the PCB is mounted. Drill a small 3mm hole for the pots positioning tab (what do you call that one pice sticking out??) as well!! Furthermore, when using a LED reflector, drill the LED hole to the size of the reflector, otherwise to the size of the LED.

- Put the pots in place on the board but do not solder em to the board yet!, Same for the LED
- Put the PCB in the case and fasten jacknuts and switchnuts (you may have to add another internal ring here) and push up the pots so they come through the front. Mount em with their rings and nuts.
- Make sure the boards edge aligns nice and straight with the case's edge.
- Solder the Pots wires and cut off excess length,
- Push the Led up in the reflector or hole and solder it.

You can now take the whole PCB module out without soldering. If your effect doesn't work now is the time for troubleshooting and fault finding.

Succes for now.
Sorry. Plain out of planes.

great stuff dirk. totally freakin pro as per usual. after hearing the clips somebody left for this box, i think it's going to be one of my first actual distortion builds! i've got a vintage rat, and that has pretty much done the trick for me as far as those tones go, but this box sounds really different. i like it a lot. it makes me want to use the term "organic", and i'm not sure how i feel about that!

Very nice work Dirk, hey that rhymes, not that I'm going to build this but when I tried to open the file to look at it , my computer completely froze, twice. I don't know if anyone else had the same problem but there may be something wrong with the file. I had to restart my computer as none of the controls worked and that never happens. Just thought I'd mention it.

Hi Dirk , I tried again , but this time I saved the file and then tried to open it. I get an error message saying the file is either damaged or corrupt. Anyone else have the same problem?

Polarysed caps are uF and not nF?! because you say C2 470nF or C8 220nF but this caps doesn't exist (I think)

I have make it, is it true or wrong?

C1: 47nF
C2: 470nF/50V think it's 470uF
C3: 1nF
C4: 100nF
C5: 47uF/25V
C6: 10uF/25V
C7: 100nF
C8: 220nF/50V think it's 220uF
C9: 100uF/25V
C10: 47uF/25V
C11: 220nF
C12: 470nF
C13: 10nF
C14: 27nF
C15: 1uF/50V
C16: 47nF
I wanna make it
I wanna make it wit chu
(again and again and again)

French... sorry ;)

The fact that polarized caps are usually referenced in uF is because the ones usually used are above 1uF. Why say 1000nF when 1uF us shorter? That doesn't take away the fact that a polarized cap of 0.47uF has the same capacitance as a polarized cap of 470nF. ;) Therefore the 470nF ( 0.47uF) and 220nF ( 0.22uF) are stated correct (and are NOT 470uF and 220uF).

remember:
1000fF = 1pF (fempto)
1000pF = 1nF
1000 nF =1uF
1000 uF = 1mF
1000 mF = 1F

(and 1000F = 1kF... which we never see )
