Hi guys (and gals?),

here is the complete bundle to do a (more or less authentic) clone of the Maestro MP-1 Phaser.

The pcb should fit a BB-sized enclosure. The layout is more of a form follows function approach... ;-). It is rather tightly packed with all those standing resistors in order to get it down to this size. Solder the three jumpers first (marked red), especially the one under IC4. After that the flat resistors and the sockets for the ICs. The square pads of the pots correspond to lug 1. For the adjustment of the trimmer take a look at the service manual that you can find here. I can't really tell which FET would be best to use. The one I specified, is just used for the layout because of it's common pinout. But probably most of the commonly used FETs will work if you watch the orientation.

With 24mil track width the minimum clearance goes down to 9mil. Just in case this is too tough for some of you home etchers, I could generate an etching template with less track width, resulting in a bigger minimum clearance. That's no problem.

If something should be unclear let me know.

Cheers and happy phasing,

Volker

I have a PC and it's not working for me either...I'm getting a "file is damaged and cannot be repaired" error

Yes, I just checked it. You need a program that supports the PDF format version 1.6 or higher, that would mean Acrobat reader version 7 or higher, or whatever program you like to use.

@chicago_mike: concerning my name: haha, it's a german name, not sooo common actually. At least I haven't met more than a handful of Volkers in my life .

Just wanted to mention that I finally found the time to build this thing.
It sounds pretty good, no problems with the building, so go ahead! :D
I used a MPF102 for the FET because that was the first one I found.

I might add photos/sound samples later...

There you go, just quick and dirty, different intensities and speeds.

Hi there,

Got a problem here. Could you please look at my thread here viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7429 and verify the voltage reading.

thanks :)

Hello,

After a first attempt failed due to my poor soldering skills and to the cheap tools that I used, I finally managed to make me a clone of this superb phaser (the best that I know).
I would not be able ever to do that without the fabulous help of Mr. Marshmellow, which was so kindly to remake the PCB without the ground plane. Thank you a lot again, man :applause: !

It worked from the second try (I made 2 solder errors again :( ), without any special tweaking.
I used a randomly choosen 2N5457 for the FET.
Because the trimpot can be used to obtain more interresting sounds (acts like a "height/depth" pot) I think that I will mount it externally, as a pot (with a 1K resistor in series).

If anyone needs my help I will do my best to help him.

Thank you very much again Mr. Marshmellow for this wonderful project!

Me too!

My last wish regarding the phasers is a Maestro Stage Phaser :)
I hope I will have some time this summer to try to make a PCB for it!

Thx again a lot marshmellow!

There is no revision, only the ground plane is removed (and you need to use 3 straps instead).
If you want it, ask marshmellow to send or to post it...

Here is a more home etching friendly layout. The first one has the track width
reduced to 16mil, the second one even reduced to 12mil for the faint-hearted ones.
The ground layer clearance is increased on both and I made the pads a bit bigger
compared to the original.

Hello!

Yesterday I built this phaser using the project file. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get it to work quite right.
At first I only got a clean signal through it, absolutely no coloration or volume loss. After I identified a dodgy piece of soldering, I got the "balls" knob to work. It now functions as some sort of tone control, listening to the effect on youtube, I think this knob now works as it should.

However, it still refuses to "phase", of course the speed knob doesn't do anything as a result. I have gone through the entire range on the trimmer but I can't find a spot which results in any phasing effect.

Of course I will keep on checking my soldering as it is the most likely reason for the effect not to work. Still, I was wondering if any of you would have any idea what could cause this behaviour.

Thank you all very much for your help!

Tim
