mini-amp enclosure - random enclosure design ideas

scuttling around on the interwebs i bumped into this little amp today. thought it might be worth sharing here?

the circuits he uses seem to be fairly known stock things but, as a graphic designer of sorts, i thought some of his ideas for enclosures were interesting. nothing particularly new but a competent mix of the design-end of hipster-chic: retro-kitsch, tats, old-skool apple motifs, etc.

anyway, there it is. make of it what you will.

Thanks for posting the link tabbycat.

That reminds me, I need to build a small bench amp.

I currently use my workshop bass amp, a Yamaha 50w bare chassis (that came out of a water damaged "Fifty 115B") sat on top of a Session 410 cab under the bench. To get at the controls I have to get find a torch and get on my hands and knees. Way too loud for testing anything, far too much potential volume.

hey rocklander and deltafred, am glad you like the links.

having spent more time on the site today i found a link to his research notes for the development of his (cricket-ruby-flavoured) build here:

and a yt clip of one of his designs:

@ deltafred

it seems we share a dilemma. i have a v loud laney class a 30w (lc30mk2). i rate it. people are sniffy about laneys but it thunders a mighty little storm. and far more reliable than the orange all valve i had before it. but in a one-bed flat? hence my need for something small, cheap and decent sounding for playing around with at bedroom volume.
have you heard many mini-amps?
the noisy cricket and ruby seems to be standards. and this one sounds good.

where is your thinking on the subject? are you pursuing any interesting leads or ideas?

I haven't given it a lot of thought, only that a 50w 410 bench amp is way too loud when suddenly you get a huge signal into it. I haven't heard any mini amps so cannot help you there.

Not that I have a neighbour problem, I am fortunate to be detached and have very understanding neighbours. I can sympathise with you living in a small flat, I lived in a terrace when I first got married, it was a bit of a shock after living on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The walls were so thin you could hear what TV channel the neighbours were watching.

I intend to build a 386 based amp (because I have a few) and plug it into one of the many old low end HiFi cabs I have kicking around.

Hi guys,
I made two miniature 1968 marshall combos, with the ms-2 circuit and a submini tube based one:

and with submini

both with 3" speakers, and dimensions 4 times smaller than the original one.

But they sound better with bigger speakers, the 6.5" cab is still a little to small, with a 8" cab they start to shine.
The lm386 ruby is still the cheapest option, anyone tried it with a cab sim?
Cheers
Thomas
