Vector-based software templates (for stompboxes)

I've noticed that several people on here use the vector graphics program Inkscape to do layouts and such with. So, why don't we start a collection of templates to use.

I've attached the template that I made for doing vero and perf layouts. It's missing several components, like trimmers, ICs with more than 8 pins, jacks, and such, but there should be enough there to get a good start. I keep the grid set to 2.54mm/.1" (not sure if that will translate in the file or not). Everything has/is on it's own layer to make it easier to work with.

Let me know if you have any problems with the file, or need any tips on how to work with the components.

OK, that's a nice help when it comes to vero board... :D

Here's the file I have as to PCB tracing... Inspired (and even straightly copied from Francisco pena from http://www.tonepad.com... You can adjust the components sizes to your needs...

As for Mr G.'s file, the grid is 0.1" large, and when deplacing pads or so, the pointer is magnetized to the intersections of the grid...

I previously posted on the forum, so if it's one time too much, please take it away modman...

ps: both files can be mixed as they appear to use the same scales, so you can have a 2D rendition of your PCB on my file using the lovely components drawn by Mr. G.

Thanks for the response lolbou! I saw the file you posted in another thread, and that's what inspired me to make this thread.

Inkscape is a great alternative to Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw. I think it can be a touch glitchy when run on Windows, but as long as you save often, it shouldn't be a problem. I run it on Linux without any problems at all.

You're very welcome Mr G., and you're right about Inkscape being a nice (and free) alternative...

Cool, I've recently started using inkscape for my drill templates and artwork. I've been building up a component library and planned to upload to the inkscape site. I've attached what I've got so far below.

Anyone got 4knob drilling template like the hermida audio??

The component library I posted above has all you need to create your own. The beauty of something like inkscape is that you can quickly and easily make up accurate templates using a bunch of standard components.

I've just spent today writing a python extension to generate dial markers to go around pot knobs.

started looking at this tonight Rob and it's very cool :applause:
how exactly do you add components? (I want to add a small toggle switch in there and maybe a 3mm led too, just not sure of the process)

Hey, you stalking me or something?

Adding components is just a matter of drawing them manually and saving. I normally start with an existing component and modify it. I can add a 3mm LED with no problem. What do you want for the switch: a pretty external view or a template/outline sort of view? Also what config SPDT/DPDT etc.? If you can link to the sort of pic you want I'll add it to my library and re-upload.

Cheers, Rob.

dewd, I'm a stalker from way back :P

yeah, I'm thinking I want it for a drilling template, but also a 'fitting-in-the-box' kinda thing. so a centre point and hole size (for drilling) and a rear package square.. pins etc. aren't so important to me I guess, I was planning on using it more for box crammage and drilling.
the dpdt is prolly most common, although I use a 3pdt toggle for the black toast etc. (the mini toggle ones from futurlec), and of course others may like the spst one (like in the thor).. hell.. I dunno lol

Here is a template i made for myself using parts of R.G.'s 1590BB layout and the Hammond CAD files. i hope this helps. Enjoy

Here are my parts. I use these parts often when I make my pannels and other designs for my effects.

I use corel draw, but I upload my templates also in pdf.

Here are a couple of schematic symbols too : http://www.mbeckler.org/inkscape/circuit_symbols/
But for schematics and layouts, i recommand using a proper CAD tool (e.g. Eagle), it's much more efficient and eventually a bit easier. Inkscape remains great for all the rest : enclosure planning, drill templates, faceplates, knobs graduations, artwork ... :thumbsup

Vector Graphics layout tools (Incskape, Illustrator, etc...)

Here's a PDF containing all of the tools that I use to make perfboard and veroboard layouts. The contents should be easily editable in any vector based program, such as Inkscape or Illustrator. The box to the right contains the components I normally use for board layouts and box layouts. The rest are just scaled down typical layouts with their corresponding drill template that I use. These are just what I try to use if my layout permits, so YMMV. The boxes are Hammond 1590a, 1590b, and 1590bb. To make a 1:1 drill template using them, just scale them up to the sizes shown by the dimensions.

I normally do all of my layouts in Eagle, and then I'll create a PDF and import it into Illustrator. From there, I'll recreate the layout in an easier to read "perf" or "vero" version. I also do this if I want to make fancy traces for PCB's as opposed to the straight lines and corner curves in Eagle.

Feel free to use the file anyway you like. Let me know if you have any trouble with the file, or if you find it useful.

Glad you like it! I can't contribute much as far as the circuits go, so I figured this was the next best thing that I could do.

If anybody has any suggestions for changes, I'm all ears.

Thanks! I thought about putting it in that other thread, but it wasn't just for Inkscape. So, that's why I started the new thread. Thanks for merging them.
